Why and How to Celebrate Disability Pride Month 2023
Disability is a part of the rich tapestry of human diversity, and something that nearly all of us will experience at some point in our lives. It’s also a significant identity that defines how we experience the world. Yet people with disabilities have been marginalized and misunderstood for generations. All disabilities and their intersecting identities should be acknowledged, valued, and respected, and one way to do that is during Disability Pride Month.
Disability Pride Month is celebrated every July and is an opportunity to honor the history, achievements, experiences, and struggles of the disability community.
|
|
Why July? It marks the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, landmark legislation that broke down barriers to inclusion in society. But barriers still exist, which is why we need to honor every kind of disability, the people who identify with them, and the wide range of supports they need to thrive. Here’s more about the history of Disability Pride Month and the story behind the flag.
Looking for ways to celebrate Disability Pride Month? We’ve got you covered.

How about Arcadia Park in Maine?
This national park may be covered with rocky beaches and granite peaks, but that doesn’t mean it’s inaccessible. For starters, there are free daily shuttles that connect the park with neighboring villages, all of which are handicap-friendly. And many of the museums, picnic areas, and campgrounds have accessible sites. Even the beaches—including Echo Lake, Sand Beach, and Ike’s Point—have options available, be it parking for those who have wheelchairs, a path to the water, a boat launch area, or ranger-led boat cruises.
Some of the best paths in the park also allow for wheelchair use. Jesup Path has a boardwalk that flows through a white birch forest, and Thunder Hole has a ramp from the Park Loop Road that leads to the main viewing area. Even Cadillac Mountain—the highest point on the East Coast—has a short trail to vistas of Frenchman Bay and the Porcupine Islands. If you want to get close to wildlife, Wildwood Stables has two wheelchair-accessible horse-drawn carriages that can take you through various areas of the park.

Although water parks are notoriously inaccessible to people with disabilities, some parks offer accessible features. Standard accessible parks may also offer splash activities, ones which involve some water though are not a water park. There is a water park in Antonio, Texas called Morgan’s Inspiration Island that aims to change all that. It's the world’s first water park designed with inclusivity in mind!
Morgan's water park offers a great way to cool down during the warm weather months of summer. In the link provided you will find additional locations that provide fun attractions and activities for the whole family to participate in.
