NAEYC Visits the Girls Club of Los Angeles

On Thursday, April 18, 2024, the Girls Club of Los Angeles (GCLA) hosted a visit by Ms. Michelle Kang, Chief Executive Officer of the National Association for the Education of Young Children.

Ms. Kang's arrival was met with a warm reception, a testament to the significance of her visit. Early education leaders, policymakers, family and center childcare providers, and GCLA’s staff, who had been diligently preparing for the event, were all in attendance. Fran Chasen, President of the California Association of Education of Young Children (CAAEYC), Dr. Ayanna Davis, President of Southern California Chapter (CAAEYC). Jackie Williams, Co-Chair LA Metro SCC-CAAEYC; Debra Coleman, Commissioner/Director, Los Angeles County Office for the Advancement of Early Care and Education (OAECE); Dean Tagawa, Executive Director Los Angeles Unified School District, CAAEYC Board members, Family-Based and Center-Based, LaShawn Brinson, Department Head, Child Development Los Angeles Southwest College and Seon Chun-Burbank, Chair for Early Childhood Education Program, Vanguard University.

Ms. Gloria J. Davis, Executive Director of GCLA, warmly welcomed Ms. Kang and led a tour of the early childhood center. The visit was marked by meaningful interactions, such as when Ms. Kang engaged in dialogue with children enjoying an afternoon snack. She also took the time to meet and talk with teachers, interns, and volunteers who eagerly shared their early childhood learning.

Reflecting on the site visit the following day at the conference keynote address, Ms. Kang expressed her profound impression, saying, “It is so clear to me that the educators, the leaders of this program, have created environments in this program where children know they are loved and nurtured. The teachers there, the ones that have been there for a year to the ones that have been there for over 20 years and counting, mentoring teachers, showed what we know about early childhood educators, that we believe in the impact of a learning environment where children can thrive. Seeing the joy with which teachers feel my heart with so much joy and pride.”

“At this time of economic and technological transition, we must keep the well-being and education of our youngest generation at the forefront of progress. This visit is a wonderful opportunity to learn how early education is growing nationwide,” said Gloria J. Davis, Executive Director of GCLA.

Ms. Kang was in town to give the keynote address to the 2024 CAAEYC Annual Conference & Expo held at the Pasadena Convention Center, April 19-21, 2024.

Charles Drew University School of Science and Medicine Collaboration Update

Master-level nursing interns from Charles Drew University (CDU) School of Science and Medicine collaborate with the Girls Club of Los Angeles (GCLA)

Two cohorts of 15 interns joined GCLA to begin their CDU internship the week of February 5th, culminating their journey the week of April 16, 2024. A group of students joined on Mondays and supported Child Development teachers in classrooms.

The cohorts ended their internship by presenting their experiences with public health services, nutrition, health promotion, general health education, and other educational resources. The nursing students form part of the MSN-ELM class Population Health and are in their 4th semester led by their instructor, Dr. Bantale Remi Ayisire. “GCLA is synonymous with compassion, resiliency, and empowerment,” said Professor Dr. Ayisire, who leads the third cohort internship with GCLA.

The second cohort of ten nursing students, under the guidance of Dr. Kevin Bowsfield, made a significant impact on GCLA’s Food Share Program. They witnessed firsthand GCLA’s efforts to combat hunger by bagging and distributing produce to 250-300 families weekly. “This group also provided health screenings such as high blood pressure and blood sugar checks and shared valuable information about stress management with families. It’s great giving back to the community!” said Professor Dr. Bowsfield.

We extend our appreciation and gratitude to our students: Chibuzo Ezinne, Tiffany Isichei, Chinenye Egharevba, Kimberly Molliner, Atineh Gasper Ghiasian, Kanitha Elam, Chioma Chukwuma, Alberto Zuniga, Ijeoma Iroegbu. Hana Abdul Cader, Olawumi Robinson, Jade Newton, Arusha Giddens, Destiny Gray, and Chad White.

“Girls Club Los Angeles was an incredible experience for which I am thankful. To see so many individuals in the community hold gratitude and appreciation made it much more worth it,” said Arusha Duncan.

Chad White reflected on the experience of volunteering, saying, “Volunteering at the Girls Club of Los Angeles and helping the local community was a wonderful experience. It was great to work with the team!”

They gave of their time, and Destiny Gray said it best when she told us, “Being able to help give back to the community was such a blessing. I am thankful to be a part of this experience.”

Dos cohortes de 15 pasantes se unieron a GCLA para comenzar su pasantía en CDU la semana del 5 de febrero, culminando su viaje la semana del 16 de abril de 2024. Un grupo de estudiantes se unió los lunes y apoyó a los maestros de Desarrollo Infantil en las aulas.

Los cohortes finalizaron su pasantía presentando sus experiencias con los servicios de salud pública, nutrición, promoción de la salud, educación sanitaria general y otros recursos educativos.

Los estudiantes de enfermería forman parte de la clase Salud de la Población de MSN-ELM y se encuentran en su cuarto semestre dirigidos por su instructor, el Dr. Bantale Remi Ayisire. WHEN OUR CHILDREN WIN, WE ALL WIN!

The Early Learning Expansion Network (ELEN) marked an evening of unity, empowerment, and enlightenment. The monthly meeting, organized by the Girls Club of Los Angeles, emphasized the power of uniting family-based business owners in early education to connect, study, and learn new strategies to serve our children better.

ELEN held the second meeting of 2024 on February 28, 2024, with Lakeshore as a special guest. Approximately 36 Providers were in attendance. The meeting's schedule featured program support, resources, and partnership strategies. The finale was a presentation with Lakeshore. GCLA made free resources available to the providers/educators.

A special congratulations goes out to our Lakeshore gift certificate winners Catina Ibizugbe: Ibizugbe Family Childcare and La Sonia Lewis: Lewis FCC-Buzzy Bee Child Development Center and our Girls Club of Los Angeles gift card winners Latrice Williams: Williams Family Childcare and Terri Rivers-Taylor: Taylor FCC-Shoes Off Child Care.

GCLA Project LEAYD Workshops Address The Importance of Mental Health

Project LEAYD students at Teach TECH High School completed a four-part series on mental health led by Nohemi Orozco, a Community Health Educator, and Yenis Gonzalez, a Community Health Advocate from California Hospital.

These workshops teach youth how to identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental health and substance use challenges. Common signs and symptoms of mental health challenges in this age group, including anxiety, depression, eating disorders and attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD).

Overall, the workshop focused on common signs and symptoms of mental health challenges among youth such anxiety, depression, eating disorders, attention deficit disorder (ADHD). A different workshop focused on expanded content on trauma, substance use, self-care, and the impact of social media and bullying.

To help youth learn these concepts, some activities included breathing exercises and stretching techniques. One final technique was a flashback to childhood, using coloring as a tool for mental relaxation.

The series closed out by having each student create a vision board. A vision board is a collage of aspiration and inspiration photos and quotes cut together from magazines. Each youth diligently worked on the vision boards with pride and thought.

This was the first time Project LEAYD hosted a workshop series on mental health with this cohort of students. This was one of our most impactful series of workshops during this school year. Next year, the students are looking forward to a more expansive offering in mental wellbeing.

The youth could see how the techniques had practical application in the face of many life challenges. Project LEAYD teaches coping skills to deal with events, decision-making skills to make better long-term choices, and a place to talk with a supportive community.

According to California Hospital Medical Center 10.2% of youth will be diagnosed with a substance use disorder in their lifetime. 1 in 5 teens and young adults’ lives with a mental health condition. 50% of all mental illnesses begin by age 14, and 75% by the mid-20s.

Talleres Enseñan la Importancia de Salud Mental

April Food Share Highlights

The Girls Club of Los Angeles is proud of the service the Food Share Program provides the community. Every Wednesday, The Food Share Program coordinates a team of volunteers and staff to provide food, ppe, and other life-preserving items for individuals and families in need.

Working closely with their partners, Food Forward, Greater New Bethel Church, and The Peoples Project powered by LA Fed, GCLA provides a balanced diet for those in need. A typical bag of groceries includes meat, fresh fruit, fresh vegetables, and shelf staples.

The Girls Club Food Share program happens every Wednesday at the GCLA Headquarters located at 2057 W. Century Boulevard in Los Angeles. We need more kind, hardworking volunteers to assist us with serving the community. Do you have a yearning to serve the community? Are you a person who loves the feeling of heartfelt gratitude? Are you willing to take a COVID Test and work on a team to accomplish something greater than yourself? If you answered yes to these questions we would love to speak with you!

GCLA is asking for volunteers to help us Wednesday mornings with our community food distribution program. Volunteers will sort, pack, and distribute food for members of the surrounding community. Our team of staff and volunteers maintain a warm, welcoming environment to help provide a caring safety net for those who need it most.

The schedule is Wednesday Mornings from 8:30 am to 10:00 am. All volunteers will receive free masks, gloves, and COVID tests. The requirements are Proof of Covid-19 vaccination, the ability to work with a team, and taking a COVID-19 rapid test onsite. GCLA está buscando voluntarios para ayudarnos los miércoles por la mañana con nuestro programa comunitario de Distribución de Alimentos. Los voluntarios clasificarán, empacarán y distribuirán alimentos para los miembros de la comunidad circundante. Nuestro equipo de personal y voluntarios mantienen un ambiente cálido y acogedor para ayudar a proporcionar una red de seguridad solidaria para quienes más lo necesitan.

El horario es los miércoles por la mañana de 8:30 am a 10:00 am. Todos los voluntarios recibirán máscaras, guantes y pruebas de COVID gratis. Los requisitos son Prueba de vacunación contra el Covid-19, capacidad para trabajar con un equipo y realizar una prueba rápida de COVID-19 en el lugar.
