Walk a Mile in Her Shoes

WIN's fourth annual walk will take place on Friday, May 6th, 2016 and, again, we need your help! We're looking for men to don a pair of bright red high heels and walk just 6 blocks along Main Street in Downtown Chambersburg. Men may walk individually or as a team, challenging friends and co-workers for this very worthy cause. We'll also ask participants to secure sponsorships and donations from their friends and family.

With the generous contributions from our 168 walkers, their families, and the community, last year we raised over $20,000 for Women In Need to help service victims of domestic and sexual violence in Franklin and Fulton counties.

Anyone with a large quantity of books to donate can make special arrangements by calling Franklin County Legal Services at (717) 262-2326 or by emailing gloria@fcls.net. The group solicits all types of books in good condition -- used and new, hardback and paperback -- and also artwork, CDs, DVDs, maps, sheet music, and books on tape.

Book Sale Information

Where: Laird Hall on the Wilson College campus in Chambersburg
Hours: 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM on Friday, May 6

Newsletter items deadline

The deadline to submit items for The Causeway is the 20th of each month.

"Since our last chat..."
"Since our last chat..." is a periodic column in The Causeway by Bar member Barb Townsend.

This month's article was submitted by Nicole Sipe and Kristen Hamilton.

Each year the Pennsylvania Bar Association conducts a multi-day CLE and networking retreat known as the Conference of County Bar Leaders, or the CCBL. Representing Franklin County, the normal attendees are the YLD Chair, a new admittee, members of the FCBA Executive Committee and our executive director. This year, as in previous years, the CCBL was held at the Nittany Lion in State College and certainly did not disappoint. In attendance this year were Mary Beth Shank, Nicole Sipe, Rosby Carr, Kristen Hamilton, Jessica Weaver, and Amelia Ambrose.

The CCBL kicked off with "Leadership: The Magic of Thought," a presentation by Joe Curcillo of Dauphin County and a member of our Franklin County Bar Association. The CLE was very informative and quite entertaining as he demonstrated how to read people in an effort to understand them and motivate them to work toward your goals as an effective leader. And for those of us who have no game face or don't watch our body language, Joe was very effective at pointing that out. Mary Beth even noted that her biggest takeaway was that sometimes we don't recognize our own nonverbal cues that we give to others.

The CLE entitled "Battle as Adversaries, Not Enemies" which was put on by the 2014-2015 Bar Leadership Institute group was eye-opening. Kristen Hamilton was one of the creators of this CLE as a member of the BLI class, in addition to one of the panelists. This CLE has now been presented at several PBA conferences and has gained much momentum throughout Pennsylvania. Rosby stated he fully enjoyed the presentation and that this opinion was not in any way biased. (wink, wink) The message hopefully delivered, which Mary Beth eloquently summarized, was one can be a zealous advocate while maintaining the integrity of our profession.

Among the other CLEs were Ellen Freedman's presentation on time management, "Bring it on Again" focusing on bar associations, bar foundations, activities, fundraising opportunities and structure, and a presentation by Terry Madonna who was the keynote speaker at Friday's luncheon. Nikki found that by attending "Bring It On (Again)" CLE, she was absolutely amazed to learn how many different programs are afforded to members of state and local bar associations and that these programs can certainly be tailored to respond to its members' various needs. One larger program discussed at several of the CLEs was the need to establish a mentoring program, linking more experienced attorneys with newer attorneys, for the benefit of both.

For those who have never attended, the CCBL is a wonderful opportunity to network with attorneys from throughout the state, finding people from all over to cultivate a relationship with, both professionally and personally. As Jessica Weaver pointed out, the CCBL was also a great opportunity for newer members of the FCBA such as herself to better get to know the other members of our bar association. This is only enhanced by the number of CLE credits you can receive simply by attending the programs offered. For newer attorneys the CCBL is a great way to get the proverbial "foot in the door" for a future role in the PBA and to also hit the ground running as a future leader of their local bar associations. For attorneys who have been in the game a little longer, the CCBL is a wonderful way to continue cultivating relationships, learning ways to establish and maintain a strong local bar association and to learn ways to motivate members of their local bar association.

We would absolutely be remiss to fail to mention the two (2) awards received by Franklin County Bar Association at the CCBL. FCBA received awards for Wills for Heroes and our annual Law Day mock trial event, both of which are projects through the YLD. The awards were given to counties whose bar associations support or put on projects, events or other community based opportunities that improve the legal profession, justice system or the community. For those who have not participated in events previously, you do not have to be a member of the YLD in order to participate. Both of these wonderful projects are simply organized by the YLD. Any bar member is able to participate. Alexandra Sipe can be contacted with any interest in Wills for Heroes and Nicole Sipe can be contacted for participation with the Mock Trial.

And finally nothing says "CCBL" like the Friday night party. The magic show was fantastic along with a D.J., themed photo booth and raffle for various prizes donated from Pennsylvania. When that party ended some of us decided to relive our glory days and head out to State College for the night. The retiring YLD members passed the torch to the incoming YLD members, who we are hopeful will continue to attend CCBL and PBA events in the future. For those of us who enjoyed the evening at Scooters listening to Velveeta until the wee hours of the morning, don't forget the cardinal rule: What happens in State College, stays in State College.
