July 31, 2024 ~ Feast of St. Ignatius Loyola

Dear Joe,

A week ago I returned from a vacation in Chile with my family. We spent time with our Chilean family and with very good friends. I also had the opportunity to revisit churches on the island of Chiloé that were founded by Jesuits before the suppression.

The church in the village of Chonchi is the one that touched my heart the most. I was overwhelmed with emotion as I read how the Jesuits were able to build 79 churches to help the islanders develop a close relationship with God.

That missionary spirit, that apostolic zeal, is what resonates with me today as we celebrate the life of Ignatius of Loyola. The Jesuits, already at the end of the world, continued out to the borders to share the greatest gift they received, Jesus Christ himself. This same spirit is maintained today, manifested in the Universal Apostolic Preferences, and recently in our Apostolic Plan.

As we celebrate Ignatius, I invite you to consider our Jesuit colleagues on mission today. Let us remember especially the Jesuits in Micronesia, missionaries on the other side of the world.

Let us pray for them, (and all of those) who work to promote Ignatian spirituality with local clergy, with the laity, but in a particular way with the young.

San Ignacio de Loyola, Ruega por Nosotros.
