Dear Fellow Alliance Members,
It’s almost the end of the fiscal year?! I can hardly believe it. Reflecting on the last three months of conversations, workgroup meetings, strategic action planning, policy trip to D.C., data review sessions, and plans for moving things forward, I feel immense gratitude.
This time spent as Interim Coordinator for The Alliance has been an incredible opportunity for learning and growth, and I couldn't have done it without you. Your wisdom, feedback, ideas, stories, feelings, and thoughts have been invaluable. Over these past three months, I've seen that The Alliance is not just an organization but a community that embodies grace, patience, kindness, empathy, enthusiasm, passion, consideration…and connection. I've felt this connection deeply, and I'm grateful for it.
As my role was always intended to be interim, The Alliance is now embarking on the search for a new Prevention and Education Manager. This is a crucial position that will shape the future of our group. I’m excited to meet, collaborate with, and support the person who will take on this role. But we can't do it without your help. Your insights and recommendations are vital in finding the right person. We would be thrilled to hire from within The Alliance’s existing network, but we also encourage members to forward this opportunity to others. More information about this position is shared in the Announcements section.
In addition to preparing to transition in our new Prevention and Education Manager, we’ve been considering new methods for Alliance members to engage with our network. I’m pleased to report that at the end of the month, we will announce new frameworks for our Regional Co-Chairs that reflect differing levels of individual capacity. We want to underscore that within The Alliance, there is space for all people from all regions of Alaska and all walks of life. We will ensure that people who want to be involved can be involved and that their voices help shape how The Alliance moves forward.
Stay tuned to learn how to experience all the wonderful benefits of being a co-chair, including professional development opportunities, participation in meetings and conferences, mentorship roles, critical decision-making work, policy work, outreach opportunities, and more! If the sound of regional co-chair work excites you, please email me at splatt@recoveralaska.org. I will ensure you get the relevant job description and answer any questions.
During the meetings I attended this week, a recurring theme was the positive impact of participation in The Alliance. Members frequently shared how the learnings and networking within The Alliance have enriched various aspects of their lives, making things easier, more joyful, more hopeful, and imbuing them with a greater sense of overall wellness.
So, here’s to the next fiscal year, filled with opportunities to enhance our lives and communities. I hope you will join me in reflecting on how your participation with The Alliance will evolve as roles change, leaders emerge, and we move forward together to prevent the harms of alcohol misuse.

Zero Suicide Workshop
Hosted by the Alaska Department of Health - Division of Behavioral Health
June 24th, 2024 | 8:30am to 4:00pm AKDT
The Zero Suicide Institute, in partnership with the Alaska Department of Health - Division of Behavioral Health, invites healthcare and behavioral healthcare organizations providing services in Alaska to apply by June 12th for an online workshop.
Zero Suicide is a transformational framework aimed at preventing suicide deaths for individuals under the care of health and behavioral health systems. It focuses on improving patient safety system-wide, emphasizing quality improvement.
This one-day workshop will teach participants how to implement the Zero Suicide model, structured around seven essential elements: leading system-wide culture change committed to reducing suicides, training a competent, confident, and caring workforce, identifying patients with suicide risk through comprehensive screenings, engaging at-risk individuals with a suicide care management plan, treating suicidal thoughts and behaviors using evidence-based treatments, transitioning individuals through care with warm hand-offs and supportive contacts, and improving policies and procedures through continuous quality improvement.
The model can be adapted to various community and organizational contexts. The session will include insights from leaders implementing Zero Suicide and provide time for questions and implementation planning. Starting in July 2024, participants will also engage in eight monthly Community of Practice sessions to further their implementation efforts. Learn more and register here!

2024 Northwest Prevention Leadership Academy: Using Liberating Structures
Back by popular demand, the 2024 Northwest Prevention Leadership Academy will combine virtual and in-person sessions to explore leadership principles for prevention coalitions using Liberating Structures. Facilitated by experts Anna Jackson and Fisher Qua, this academy aims to foster active participation and innovation among team members, collaborators, and communities. It will be held online and in-person, culminating in a session in Tacoma, Washington, on September 11 and 12, 2024.
The Academy is targeted at community-level and prevention practitioners in HHS Region 10 (Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington). It offers limited registration, prioritizing those new to the program. Participants are expected to attend all sessions, utilize appropriate technology for online meetings, and engage actively in both formats. If state-specific slots remain unfilled, registration opens for broader regional participation after July 1st. Learn more and register here.
Special note! Alliance members interested in attending are encouraged to contact splatt@recoveralaska.org. Recover Alaska might be able to offer event scholarships in the new fiscal year.

Healing and Connection at Unalaska's Substance Misuse Symposium
The Substance Misuse Symposium, organized by the APIA Health Department, occurred last month. The event was a resounding success, with a larger audience from last year of community members who provided overwhelmingly positive feedback afterward. Thank you to the presenters, including Douglas Finny, Richard Eaton, Heidi Lucking, and Chole Ramirez, for delivering comprehensive and educational information on our available Substance Use Disorder (SUD) programs, overdose prevention, and Naloxone training. Additionally, their insights on how to support loved ones struggling with SUD and addressing the stigma and shame surrounding SUD were invaluable. We owe a special thanks to Luke Stowe, who played a pivotal role in organizing the event and skillfully moderated the proceedings.
Thank you for coming together to provide another wonderful event this year for the Unalaska community!

New Brochure on Navigating Conversations About Substance Use
Developed by VOA Alaska and partners, this brochure facilitates meaningful conversations about substance use and safety interventions between parents and youth. Emphasizing the importance of protective factors, the brochure highlights healthy eating, exercise, and sleep habits as crucial components of well-being. It encourages youth to engage in common activities with friends and family, fostering strong social connections and emotional support.
The brochure distinguishes between modifiable risk factors like behaviors and stress and non-modifiable factors like genetics and health conditions. It advises youth to be aware of their family health history and to limit screen time while encouraging parents to engage in regular health discussions and set healthy routines.
The brochure also discusses how protective factors can counteract the effects of risk factors, ensuring better health outcomes for both youth and their families. This highlights the potential for positive change and fosters a sense of hope and optimism. Download the brochure here.

Alliance Materials
Get Involved
Between starting new work and sustaining our progress, there are many opportunities to participate in The Alliance! All current workgroups are open to any member who would like to join. You can always read more about our workgroups and their purpose on the Get Involved page of our website. Our network practices an emergent strategy, and we update information based on our network's needs.
- The Communications/Social Norms Workgroup will be supporting the social norms campaign and The Alliance's various other internal and external communications needs. The Comms Workgroup meets on the second Tuesday of each month from 1-2 pm.
- The Data and Learning Workgroup will be supporting data equity conversations and practices.
- The Evaluation and Learning Workgroup is where members can participate in developing and overseeing the process of reflecting on the work of the network to identify what is working well and where more attention may be needed so we can continue to develop and grow.
- The Strategy and Design Workgroup builds structures and processes for the network to work in alignment with our values and theory of change.
Workgroups will take a Summer break in July and resume in August. This will be a great time to start as workgroups will be working through planning and prioritizing activities to meet the objectives of the strategic action plan over the next year and many exciting opportunities exist for The Alliance and communities within this plan!
You are welcome to ask questions about those workgroups or to ask to join any of them.
