Advocacy Spotlight: Aging Summit Supports Economic Resilience Across the Lifespan

In 2020, 1 billion people were over 60; by 2050, this number is projected to have more than doubled to 2.1 billion. Today, 17 million of these older adults face economic insecurity due to rising expenses, fraud and scams, inadequate nutrition, and limited access to transportation. Even those living comfortably risk slipping into poverty from a single adverse life event. We all want to thrive in our longer lives but to do this, we need to intentionally drive positive change to address the demographic and financial realities of aging.

To kick-off a collaborative and inspired conversation about economic resilience in our region and across the nation, AgeGuide is hosting our third annual Aging Summit.  Here we will explore innovative strategies to ensure all of us are able to meet our financial needs, enjoy a healthy life, access employment and learning opportunities, and live a life filled with purpose at all stages of life.

Recognizing World Elder Abuse Day

On June 15th, we observe World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD), which is a day that focuses global attention on the problem of physical, financial, and emotional abuse of older adults. WEAAD was launched by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and the World Health Organization at the United Nations. With a growing global population of older adults, and increasing longevity, abuse of older adults is a serious problem that affects health and human rights. It is vital to raise awareness of this issue and thus prevent it whenever and wherever possible.

Supporting LGBTQ+ Older Adults

Pride Month, observed every June, is a time to honor the LGBTQ+ community, celebrating diversity, promoting equality, and commemorating the struggles and achievements of LGBTQ+ individuals. While much focus is often placed on the vibrancy and activism of younger generations, it is equally important to celebrate and acknowledge the contributions and experiences of older LGBTQ+ adults. These individuals have lived through significant historical milestones and societal shifts, often paving the way for the freedoms and rights enjoyed by many today.

AgeGuide’s mission to be a vital resource and advocate for people as we age by providing thoughtful guidance, supportive services, and meaningful connections, aligns with the goal of Pride Month and holds space for LGBTQ+ older adults and their caregivers.

The Significance of Juneteenth for Older Adults

Juneteenth, observed annually on June 19th, commemorates the day in 1865 when enslaved African Americans in Texas were informed of their freedom, marking the effective end of slavery in the United States. The holiday marks a pivotal moment in American history and has evolved into a day of reflection, celebration, and advocacy for racial equality.

This historic event has resonance for older adults, who play a crucial role in preserving and passing down the rich legacy of Juneteenth to younger generations. For many, Juneteenth is not only a time of celebration but also a moment for reflection and education.
