The University of the District of Columbia David A. Clarke School of Law hosted its second annual Black Women Leading in Law event on Thursday, March 21, at the UDC Student Center in Heritage Hall. The event, created to celebrate the legacy of Jean Camper Cahn, the first Black woman to co-establish a law school, also supported UDC Law’s commitment to cultivating the professional identities of its students.
More than 140 attendees gathered to participate in the event and hear from featured speaker former U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch. The evening began with a welcome by third-year law student Jayla Tolson and was immediately followed by a tribute to Jean Camper Cahn by Dean Johnson. One of the many highlights of the evening included a moving tribute in memory of beloved professor and DC School of Law Foundation Board member Joyce Batipps, given by her daughter Christina Batipps. At the height of the event, attendees were treated to a powerful discussion on leadership and Jean Camper Cahn’s impact on the legal profession led by Dean Johnson and featured speaker Madame Attorney General Lynch. Toward the conclusion of the event, members of the audience were invited to participate in the question-and-answer segment, which further enriched the conversation and experience. The evening concluded with a dessert reception featuring a musical performance by Shawn Allen’s Choice band.
