The Academy family mourns the passing of Dr. J. Stevens Bean.

Head of School for thirteen years and the parent of three Academy students; Sarah, Suzy and James, Steve and his wife Betsy lived

on-campus in Merrick House with their golden retrievers. A warm and approachable teacher, a trusted colleague, and an avid sailor, Dr. Bean would often be found running a booth at Academy Day, helping serve chili at potluck dinners or climbing a ladder while decorating the gym for the Geranium Ball. He was hands-on, had a wonderful laugh, he was modest, he personified integrity and a dedicated work-ethic, and he touched the lives of hundreds of families during his tenure.
