A Message from the
Chief Executive Officer
Dear Friends and Supporters of ABC Recovery Center,
First, allow me to wish everyone in our community a Happy independence Day!
I am thrilled to share some exciting news in this quarter’s newsletter. On July 1st, we celebrated a significant milestone in our journey with the groundbreaking ceremony for our BHCIP Expansion project. This momentous occasion marks the beginning of a new chapter for ABC Recovery Center, one that promises to enhance our capabilities and extend our reach in providing essential services to those in need.
We will have a two brand new residential units (men’s and women’s), An indoor gym, indoor nursing station, offices for all of the staff needed for the expansion, a new admissions building to receive new participants, and a large plant operations building for all of our maintenance supplies and storage needs. The project will exceed 45,000 square feet
The BHCIP Expansion project represents our commitment to addressing the growing demand for behavioral health services in our community. With this expansion, we aim to offer more comprehensive support and state-of-the-art facilities, ensuring that our clients receive the highest quality care.
This achievement would not have been possible without the unwavering support of our stakeholders, dedicated staff, and the families who trust us with their care. Your contributions, encouragement, and belief in our mission have been instrumental in bringing this project to fruition. We are deeply grateful for your partnership and the role you play in our success.
As we look forward to the completion of the expansion, we remain focused on our core values of compassion, integrity, and excellence. Together, we are building a brighter future for those we serve, and we are honored to have you by our side on this journey.
Thank you once again for your continued support and commitment to ABC Recovery Center. We would not be who we are without you.
Warm regards,
|

OUR NEW FACILITY IS UNDERWAY
By the time this newsletter is published, the ground-breaking on our new facility will be underway.
To help meet the growing needs for our vulnerable population, ABC Recovery Center is expanding our footprint, expecting to break ground on a capital project in July 2024 that will enable them to increase our capacity by 160 percent. ABC Recovery Center received a grant of $27+ million through state funds for such expansion projects. .
The BHCIP funding is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for facilities who serve disadvantaged populations to position their organizations to make meaningful changes in our communities. This investment into Substance-Use Treatment and Mental Health Services is historic and without precedent. This grant application encompassed Behavioral Health Continuum Infrastructure Program (BHCIP) projects ready to launch and Community Care Expansion (CCE) opportunities. This grant opportunity is meant to expand community capacity for serving the behavioral health (mental health and substance use disorder/SUD) population, funding organizations who made a commitment to serve Medi-Cal recipients.
When the project completes, the capacity will more than double for residential services. At present we have 75 licensed residential beds. This project would expand that capacity for the two counties served to 195 licensed beds enabling us to serve 1300 more individuals annually. There are only two other Residential Substance-Use Providers in the Coachella Valley, neither of which is expanding facilities currently. The new capital project is being built on ABC’s existing property on an undeveloped 5.9 acres of zoned commercial use space adjoining the current facility. The 46,000 sq ft. expansion. Includes offices, recreation area, full kitchen and dining room, and plant operations buildings.

The image above has been installed on signage in the new H.N. & Frances C. Berger Foundation Center. The center is prominently placed in the Leahy Administration Building, accessed immediately upon entry in the building.
As shared in the images below, the center is comprised of 10 work stations, eight with a new computer and monitor, as well as an instructor's podium, large presentation screen and other technological needs to fully provided educational content. ABC Recovery Center's staff will be utilizing this center to both provide, and be provided instruction on substance use addiction.
Earlier this year news channel 3 and the H.N. and Frances C. Berger Foundation presented an Impact Grant of $45,000 to ABC Recovery Center which was utilized to create the center. "We know it's only going to get worse, unless we all try to raise awareness as to the problems that we are all experiencing, our families are experiencing. With everything from trying to identify people that are using, to preventing the problem, to recovery," KESQ General Manager Jerry Upham said.
This generous funding of our grant request has enabled ABC to establish a state-of-the-art learning center within our current administration building. This center will serve as a generator of knowledge and empowerment, equipping individuals with the necessary tools and resources to combat the Fentanyl epidemic, among other substance use crisis. We are not only addressing immediate challenges but also fostering long-term resilience and prevention strategies.
Special thanks to Catharine Reed for her initial outreach and to all the board members of the H.N. and Frances C. Berger Foundation for their support of our organization, as well as the care they provide throughout our community and beyond.

THANK YOU TO THE REGIONAL ACCESS PROJECT FOUNDATION
|
|
For a second year, ABC Recovery Center has received funding from the Regional Access Project (RAP) Foundation for our Family Program. Year 2023-2024 and now year 2024-2025 was granted $99,999 in funding each year, supporting client family members at ABC with counseling and mental health services.
Our family program is dedicated to supporting family members who have been impacted by the loved one’s substance use disorders and providing them greater opportunities for good mental health. We realize the importance of treating the whole family system while serving the clients. Loving someone with substance use disorders can be daunting. Families often feel confused, helpless, and alone. Addiction impacts each member of the family, often profoundly. The focus is on getting the client sober, but without including the family an important component goes missing. Treating the individual without family involvement may limit the effectiveness of treatment for two main reasons: it ignores the devastating impact of SUDs on the family system leaving family members untreated, and it does not recognize the family as a potential system of support for change. Substance use disorders (SUDs) are a family disease.
The Regional Access Project Foundation (RAP) Inc. incorporated in 1992 as a 501(c)(3) public benefit corporation in order to address unmet needs in health, mental health and juvenile intervention for residents of eastern Riverside County through grants and technical assistance to not for profit service providers.
Funding of the RAP Foundation is primarily through unique cooperative agreements between the RAP Foundation and the County of Riverside; and, between the County of Riverside and the City of Palm Desert Redevelopment Agency. Their mission: to provide funding, oversight, technical assistance, and guidance to nonprofit, community-based organizations or other collaborative groups, which serve the populations of eastern Riverside County in the areas of health, mental health, and juvenile intervention.

ABC Recovery Center was proud to participate in the Riverside Latino Commission on Mental Health's 1st Annual Walk for Mental Health Saturday, May 6, at the Coachella Veterans Memorial Park. The event is aimed at raising awareness about mental health and promoting the idea that a healthy mind leads to a healthy life with the slogan, “Mente Sana, Vida Sana.”
The free event was an opportunity for individuals to walk together and show their support for those struggling with mental health issues. “It’s very important,” says Seham Saba, Deputy Director of the Riverside Latino Commission Counseling Center. “This side of the valley doesn’t have many services. Once Latino Commission got established, we were able to provide the service to all parts of the valley, but we do provide services all the way to Desert Hot Springs.”
According to the commission, substance abuse frequently has roots in mental health issues, so it’s crucial to work together to address both concerns. The Latino Commission’s work is especially crucial for veterans who may not have access to sufficient mental health services.
“A lot of the time, veterans don’t have enough services for them, and they come to us with PTSD and other mental health issues,” explains mental health advocate Jesus Loureiro. “Latino Commission provides services for them so they can return with the best quality of life.”

Hello Families,
2024 is off to a great start here at ABC Recovery Center’s Family Program. January‘s family workshop involved 16 clients and 22 family members. It was wonderful having such a robust group that displayed love, concern, and support for each other. Here are some of the comments from our participants:
“I was able to have my voice heard and learn to let go of the past, move forward, setting and communicating healthy boundaries.”
“I felt supported knowing that others have experience what I have, this has lifted a weight off my shoulders.”
The webinar is continuing with strong support and we’ve had an additional webinar on Saturdays please join Thursday 4:00 to 5:00 or Saturday 10:00 to 11:00 by cutting and pasting the link into your browser: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/88450969004

The team at ABC does an extraordinary job in caring for our clients and their families. Sometimes we need to lighten their load, like taking the time for some fun, away from ABC's campus. The clinicians of ABC, our staff who work directly with the clients for their substance use disorders and mental health care, took in the movie, Inside Out 2 and were asked to wear the color of the emotion that they most identify with. Their choices are apparent above.
In the movie, the Emotions characters are represented by specific colors:
Joy is yellow
Anxiety is orange
Disgust is green
Fear is purple
Anger is red
Sadness is blue
Envy is bright green/cyan
Boredom is indigo
Embarrassment is pink
Nostalgia is beige
Looks like a good time! Thanks to our clinicians, for all they do for those we serve.

Every month, the ABC Recovery Center team identifies our Rock Stars. This is a peer designation which makes it even more special. Rock Stars are member of our staff who are going above and beyond the expectations of their positions. They are making our mission happen and are integral to the important changes we are helping our clients make in their lives.
Monthly, staff are included in the request to nominate a Rock Star. They are asked what inspired them to nominate their peer and are provided six criteria to select from that apply to their nominee. The survey is tabulated, and the winners are announced by Human Resources.
|
|
Our April Rock Star is Deonte Clayton! Deonte is a former client , hired as a Behavioral Tech October 2023 and has over three years of sobriety. On Day one Deonte understood our mission in supporting the clients. His co-workers share that Deonte is a dependable hard worker, comic at times with a big personality.. Deonte is also a volunteer member of the Gala Committee.
|
|
Our May Rock Star is Pete Marquez Pete joined ABC Recovery Center last July and quickly established himself as an integral part of the Janitorial team. His attention to detail and willingness to go the extra mile have made a noticeable impact on our campus. Those who interact with him most would note how friendly and communicative he is. We are grateful to have someone with his character representing our organization.

We are helping provide a future for over a thousand people a year, and that doesn’t include the number of people whose futures will be impacted when our clients are returned to them, sober and safe. We are here to provide them every opportunity to have the future they want.
