Ponderings of the Intern: Spiritual Practices

Each month, I will write an article on a topic that I’ve been pondering or have received questions about.  Enjoy!

In the last month I have had several of our adult members mention that they don’t really know what Lutheran theology is or what it means to be a Lutheran in a world of many religions.  This is actually something I think about a lot!  I was raised Catholic and joined an ELCA Lutheran church in 2005 without really knowing much about it.  I did a quick internet search and immediately liked that they ordain women, and, at the time, were working on implementing the ordination of our LGBTQIA+ siblings (now fully supported by the ELCA).

Then I started attending church.  One of the things I noticed was that there was a large focus on God’s love and grace for us.  This felt very welcoming and inclusive, and I liked it.  I remember my pastor giving me a copy of Luther’s Small Catechism, which I put on my shelf and didn’t look at (embarrassingly until I started seminary!).  She also gave me a copy of the books Pastrix and Accidental Saints by Nadia Bolz-Weber, which I read voraciously and gave me just enough Lutheran theology to pique my interest!

Last year I took a class called Lutheran Confessions, which taught me a lot about Lutheran theology (though I still have much to learn).  I also realized that I really should have read through that copy of the Small Catechism I was given years ago, because that is a great place to start!

I will be offering a book study of the book By Heart: Conversations with Martin Luther’s Small Catechism.  This will give us a chance to explore and discuss Martin Luther’s theology. . . or things like

  • Law and Gospel
  • Sinner and Saint
  • Imago Dei
  • Justification
  • Works Righteousness

Many of you are cradle Lutherans and probably know theology better than me!  I would love to learn from you and have you share your wisdom.  Some of you may just like a refresher, and some of you might be new to Lutheranism.  All are welcome - all belong!

We will meet on Wednesdays starting on October 25  at 5:30 PM (just in time for Reformation!).  If you would like us to order a book for you, please see Maggie in the church office - the cost will be $20.  I hope you will join me for what I hope will be wonderful conversations!

Blessings!

Intern Jenny

What to Expect at Worship

For your convenience, masks will be made available in the entrance areas and hand sanitizing stations are also available around the building. We ask that if you are not feeling well, or feel that you may have been exposed to COVID, you view the service via live-streaming. You can find this on our website: https://ctkdelafield.org/

There are chairs with arms in the Upper Sanctuary for those who need assistance and support when transitioning to a stand. Visitors using wheelchairs/walkers may wish to sit upstairs. Pr. Jackie will bring communion to those who remain in the upper sanctuary.

Families are important to Christ the King!

Our Prayground is located towards the back of the lower sanctuary. Biblically grounded toys and activities will be available to help young people (and their families) participate in worship. Activity bags are also available to take to the pews. Information for our young people and families will be posted above the bookshelf next to Jenny’s door. See Jenny for more information!

In the lower sanctuary, there are open spaces for wheelchairs on either side of the first pew near the baptismal font. Access to the lower sanctuary is via the ramp in the hallway.

*Hearing assistance is available during worship as well as large print bulletins

Please ask an usher for help with whatever type of assistance you may need.

Welcome to FALL WORSHIP at Christ the King

During the Autumn months, we will think about what it means that God is continually REFORMING AND RENEWING us and God’s good creation. During the offering, we will take time to pause and bring our gifts forward singing: “Let the Vineyards be Fruitful” in praise to our God of the bountiful

harvest.

Synod News

In 2023, the Greater Milwaukee Synod participated in a unique photo storytelling project by A Peace of My Mind. The series features black and white portraits of lay and rostered GMS faith leaders, and their answers to the question, “When have you felt included or excluded from a group or community?”

We invite GMS congregations to share and discuss the project in worship, small group ministries, and more. We hope the experience will inspire our members to share and listen to one another’s stories, and to grow in faith and fellowship!

We’re currently sharing the project in two formats:
