Drain Your Hot Tub the Right Way

If you have a hot tub, you will likely be draining it before you close up your cottage for the season.  Here are a few ways you can do this in a more eco-friendly manner:
  • Do not use clarifiers and other additives to remove the chlorine or phosphates from the tub before draining it. You will only be replacing existing toxic chemicals with new ones. These additives are not as safe as advertised.
  • Try to stop chlorination three or four days before draining your hot tub to allow the chlorine time to dissipate somewhat. You can check the chlorine levels with a chlorine test kit before draining.
  • Drain your hot tub water as far away as possible from the lake and nearby streams or wetland areas. Even residual chlorine is toxic to fish and crustaceans. Phosphates in your hot tub water can contribute to algal blooms in the lake.
News from the Township of Lake of Bays

Community Planning Permit By-Law
The Township of Lake of Bays is reviewing and consolidating its two existing zoning by-laws (Development Permit By-law 2004-180 and Comprehensive Zoning By-law 2004-181) and creating a new Community Planning Permit (CPP) By-law to implement the policies of the Township’s Official Plan. This system will clearly identify development rules and requirements applicable throughout the entire Township. The new Community Planning Permit By-law applies to all lands within the Township.

There will be a public meeting on Tuesday October 26, starting at 10:00 a.m. on Zoom to give the public an opportunity to provide comments to Council (Planning Matters) about the proposed new Community Planning Permit By-law.
