"There is always, always, always something to be thankful for."

That is possibly one of the best quotes for this Thanksgiving season and for always. We are thankful for so much this year - and that includes being thankful for you!
Rx for health:  watch TV!?!

couch potatoes
Watching TV can bring up visions of couch potatoes binge-watching Netflix shows. Of course that's hardly the healthiest of images! Here's an idea: switch  channels to a healthy TV station. Introducing: "Inspiring Healthy Living TV" by Juice Plus+."

An Optical Solution to Overeating?

Recent research by Professors Brian Wansink and Koert van Ittersum explored how a well established optical illusion leads us to make inaccurate estimates of serving size, depending on what size plate they are presented on. The Delboeuf illusion has long been known to cause us to misjudge the size of identical circles when they are surrounded by larger circles of varying sizes. The more "white space" around the circle, the smaller it appears. We all learned this in school, but it never hurts to be reminded, right?

Creative Growing in Coal Country

It's amazing how the Tower Garden has inspired creativity in so many different places and for so many different reasons!

In Coal Country, West Virginia, thousands of miners have lost jobs but
two farmers are doing what they can to keep wealth in their community AND provide healthy food to more people.

Farmer Joel McKinney wants to raise the profile of local farming and help small farmers make extra income. He's doing that in a number of ways and one of them is using the Tower Garden. Joel says, "I want to use as much vertical space as I can and really amaze people with the poundage of food, because I'm growing up instead of out."

McKinney sells lettuce to the local high school and makes about $800 every three weeks. And he al so gives away some of his produce to the food pantry, which is run by his parents. Along with a handful of other farmers, he has started a farmers market outside the food pantry. Read more...

Be Mindful This Season

beautiful fall colors
"Fall is a feast for the physical senses, the perfect opportunity to step out of our thoughts and into the body, connecting with the world around us."
- Andy Puddicombe, co-founder of the meditation app Headspace.

Mindfulness exercise:
Step outside on a fall day.
Notice the quality of the light.
Feel the air against your skin, cooler than it was just a few weeks ago.
Observe the sunlight filtering through the trees.
Notice the play of the shadows.
Listen to the sounds of rustling leaves.
Inhale the smell of an autumn day.
Happy Thanksgiving!
