An Interview with Noemi Sallai, 2017 Concerto Competition Winner
How did you hear about PRISMA?
I heard about PRISMA from my friend. We both go to Juilliard. I wanted to go somewhere where I could play a lot in orchestra, and develop my orchestra playing skills, and my friend told me that PRISMA was a great place to go, so I decided I would give it a try.
What was your experience in the first round of the Concerto Competition like?
I didn't even take [the Concerto Competition] too seriously, I thought I would just send in the video and I wouldn't have thought that I could advance, but I did. When I found out, I was so happy, it was unbelievable.
How has your PRISMA experience helped you work towards your musical goals?
I think PRISMA helped me a lot. We had excerpt classes almost every day with our clarinet teacher, Alain [Desgagne], and mock auditions. The comments that the teachers were giving me about those mock auditions were really helpful. The orchestra playing itself is wonderful to do, too. I play the E flat clarinet, which is one of the accessory instruments that I have to play in orchestra, so it's a great practice for that, too. Every day, from morning to evening, it's all about music, and I love it. It's wonderful. I can only recommend it to everyone. It's such a pleasure to play with the faculty members, I learn so much.
