We probably don't need to tell you how critical the need for affordable housing is in this county. According to a 2022 report by the National Association of Home Builders, San Luis Obispo ranks third among the top five least-affordable small housing markets in the nation. An astounding eighty-two percent of extremely low-income households in this county are paying more than half their income on housing costs according to the California Housing Partnership 2021 Affordable Housing Needs Report. This report also shows that, while state funding for affordable housing has increased in recent years, federal funding has dropped by almost fifty percent.
That's why we're working to create and preserve affordable housing in our community. At Habitat, volunteers and donors make it possible for us to serve low-income families, individuals, and seniors by building new homes, helping them maintain their homes, and revitalizing local neighborhoods. Together we can make a difference in our community by working to change these statistics.
