May Developments

Dear Friends,

Typically, in our May newsletter, we thank all the synagogues and volunteers who participated in Sukkot in Spring, a signature Yachad program. Hundreds of volunteers from all the area synagogues, have worked with us over the past 30 years. However, since the spring of 2020, our home repair work done by all these volunteers changed substantially and most likely permanently.

Over the past three years due to COVID-19 restrictions, Yachad has had to severely limit the work of volunteers. Yet, the need for our services continued to grow, as people were spending more time in their homes. We met this challenge by hiring skilled tradespeople, using COVID-safe protocols to make critical repairs that addressed health and safety issues. It worked well.

By employing skilled tradespeople, we are able to address more complicated home repair needs with greater efficiency. Our focus on replacing roofs, mold remediation, electrical and plumbing repairs, and much needed basic kitchen renovations are both improving health and increasing the home equity in homes. Better health and building new wealth for our homeowners is all happening under one roof, quite literally.

For now, we plan to limit our unskilled volunteer work. This fall, we do hope to call on our semi-skilled HandyMensch volunteers to help on a few smaller projects. Please let us know if you are interested.

To all of our volunteers, a sincere thank you for all that you did to clean, paint, and shlep to support Sukkot in Spring. Now I ask that you continue to show your support by making a financial contribution instead. Donations will help pay for new roofs, plumbing repairs, mold remediation measures, and other important healthy housing work. There’s still so much you can do to help, and we and our clients need it. Now, you just won’t be sore the next day.

With great appreciation,

Audrey Lyon
