Father's Day
Father's Day Facts
Father's Day was first observed in 1908 in Fairmont, Virginia.  It was inspired by a mining accident that killed over three hundred men.  Over two hundred of these men were fathers.  Due to a lack of support outside of the community, this observation never gained traction.

Sonara Louise Smart Dodd, founded Father's Day after seeing her father raise six children after their mother died.

Spokane Ministerial Association and the local Young Men's Christian Association supported the effort.
  • June 19, 1910 First official Father's Day celebrated in Spokane Washington
  • June 1916 President Woodrow Wilson approved the observation of Father's Day
  • June 1924 President Calvin Coolidge added his support to the idea of a National Day for Fathers
  • June 1966 President Lyndon Johnson signed a Presidential Proclamation declaring the Third Sunday in June as Father's Day
  • June 1972 President Richard Nixon establishes permanent nation observation of fathers to be held on the third Sunday each June.
Have a wonderful weekend with the fathers in your life.

Sincerely,
