TEXAS NEEDS A NEW LT. GOVERNOR

OUR CURRENT ONE IS DEFECTIVE

Democratic Candidates for Lt. Governor: Mike Collier (l) and Matthew Dowd

Governor Greg Abbott's prominence in the last year and a half is largely due to the COVID pandemic and related emergencies; in Texas, we have a relatively weak Governor and the Lt. Governor is actually the more influential role since the Lt. Governor serves as President of the State Senate and sets that body's agenda. And while Abbott has been in the news for his rightward march, Dan Patrick, whose given name is Dannie Scott Goeb, has always been a right-wing ideologue and has been pushing extremist issues for his entire political career. This past Legislative session has been no exception.

In March, Patrick "announced that critical race theory and 1619, and all that BS is nonsense and will destroy our nation." After House Democrats were able to water down a bill that aimed to "limit how history, racism, and current events are taught in classrooms," Patrick convinced Abbott to add this issue to a special session, and the Lege was able to pass HB 3979, which stipulates that "teachers don’t have to talk to students about controversial current events or policy issues, and if they do, they must present them without any political bias— though the law doesn’t define what constitutes “controversial” or “bias.” Slavery and racism cannot be taught as a central part of American history, only a “deviation” — as if hundreds of years of chattel slavery dating back to colonial times can be called a "deviation."

Another issue of critical importance to Patrick is the preservation of the Disney-movie version of The Alamo myth. While the courage of the Alamo defenders is undeniable, the mythology around The Alamo, like the "Lost Cause" mythology of the Confederacy, is largely a 20th Century invention and does not stand up to scrutiny. Research in recent years, some related to the ongoing renovation of the Alamo grounds in San Antonio, reveals a far more complex story that doesn't quite match up to the John Wayne movie.

This past summer, several Texas writers published a book, Forget the Alamo: The Rise and Fall of an American Myth, that challenged the Alamo’s innumerable legends. Patrick went on the offensive, demanding that the Bullock State History Museum cancel a webinar by the authors to talk about the book and the Alamo myth. 70,000+ Texans have died of COVID, the power grid, which caused up to 700 deaths when it failed this past winter, still isn't fixed, and our Texas public education system is still woefully underfunded while property taxes continue to rise, but Dan Patrick has his priorities.

LATE BREAKING ELECTION INFORMATION

I voted Texas.png

Constitutional Election: Based on election day returns, it appears that all 8 Constitutional Amendments passed.

Turn-out, however, was abysmal. In Collin County, 52,220 ballots were cast - out of 658,898 registered voters, for a turn-out of about 8% county-wide. Statewide, it may be a bit lower than that.

HD118 Special Election: Republican John Lujan was able to flip the State House seat in San Antonio/Bexar Co., defeating Democratic candidate Frank Ramirez. The seat was previously held by former state Rep. Leo Pacheco, D-San Antonio, who resigned earlier this year to teach at San Antonio College.

Collin College: Another professor is suing President Neil Matkin, Collin College, and the board of trustees for violating her First Amendment right to free speech. Dr. Lora Burnett’s lawsuit follows on the heels of a lawsuit filed by Dr. Suzanne Jones, also for violation of her rights. I wish the family of Iris Meda – the professor of nursing who came out of retirement and died of Covid after contracting it from one of her students – would sue them for failing to provide a safe working environment...

Commissioner’s Court: Most of their recent meetings have been short, coming in under 30 minutes with most of the time taken up by public speakers. Cheryl Williams has missed 2 meetings in a row with no explanation. Susan Fletcher was absent last week. Apparently, she’s on vacation. Perhaps she’s exhausted from all her work redrawing the commissioner court redistricting maps alongside Darrell Hale (who used Excel instead of an actual mapping tool). I do so love having a distinct lack of confidence in the competence of our leaders...

Allen ISD.jpeg

Allen ISD Board of Trustees: The board continues to be horrible (this seems to be a trend in our Republican leadership). Instead of working with families to provide their children with the best education, Allen treat them disrespectfully. The district’s casual disregard towards families happens regardless of whether families are trying to keep their children safe from Covid, attempting to adequately handle medical concerns (IEP meetings), or trying to have their children’s learning issues addressed (ARD meetings). AISD already has one lawsuit due to their refusal to do what they’re supposed to do. During the last board meeting, one family tried to get a Region X facilitator at their ARD meetings because they didn’t believe they’d get treated well by Allen ISD. This was denied. It’s almost as if they want yet another lawsuit...

LWAN: If you enjoy reading these columns, please join LWAN. I can’t write these columns without a lot of help! If we want true change, we must know what’s going on. That means monitoring every city council and school board in Collin County. This is something anyone can do and it’s interesting work. Please let me know if you’re interested.
