Shabbat Chanukah - December 7th 2023 - Kislev 24, 5784

Shabbat Shalom Message

from Rabbi Rachel Heaps

When I was growing up, we had a tall, narrow, vaguely stable Chanukiah. Often, we would light it on the dinner table, recite the blessings, and then move the menorah not to the windowsill, but to the kitchen sink. We had an electric menorah by the windows, lighting up the evening and “advertising the miracle of Chanukah” to our neighbors. But the menorah with the actual flame was moved to a fire-safe location almost as soon as it was lit. Not quite what the rabbis of old had in mind.

Think About It Thursday

Think About It Thursday is a weekly year-end reminder to include Temple Jeremiah in your charitable giving.

Do you have stocks or other appreciated securities that you have held for over one year? Consider using these assets for your charitable giving!* By directly gifting these appreciated assets to Temple Jeremiah, you are able to deduct the full fair market value of the stock and bypass the capital gains tax you would otherwise have to pay upon sale of the asset. You enjoy a tax-smart way of making a gift, while you help the temple!

Please contact  Leslie Landman, Director of Philanthropy, for stock transfer instructions and with any questions about year-end donations and other giving opportunities.

*Be sure to consult with your tax advisor about your specific circumstances.

Donations to our Annual Fund help us meet the day-to-day costs of operations and help support all the incredible programming and worship opportunities at temple.

Don’t just think about it… Donate to our Annual Fund today!

Every gift is appreciated and meaningful!

Addressing Antisemitism in a Time of Crisis with Oren Jacobson

We're excited to welcome back Oren Jacobson on Tuesday, December 19th at 7:00 p.m. to discuss the real-time ways in which antisemitism is showing up in discourse around the war between Hamas and Israel, especially in more progressive spaces. The goal of this program is to ensure everyone understands why and how we can effectively address it. To be very clear, the conversation will not focus on Israeli policy and actions. Rather, it will focus on how the discussion around what’s happening is impacting Jews in the diaspora.

"The History of the State of Israel, Zionism through 2023: The first 75 years, How did we get here and what will happen next?" Multi-Session Adult Education with Uri Feinberg

In the aftermath of the devastation that befell the State of Israel and the Jewish People which began on Simchat Torah, October 7th, 2023, many may find themselves on very shaky ground. How did this happen, why did this happen, what actually happened and how can I explain how I feel and why? These may be just some of the questions emphatically circling our consciousness. While no one can promise answers to all of these questions, we believe that a deep dive into the history of the State of Israel will offer a first step toward creating a broader, stronger foundation of knowledge on which to stand. Join Uri Feinberg, a Jewish educator and Israel tour guide, for a journey through the history of the young state through this seven-session course.
