TECH TIP: GMAIL ACCOUNTS

Google will be deleting old Gmail accounts that have been inactive for more than two years. Google says that decision has been made to improve security and protect the privacy of our users.

Log in to your account to ensure that it remains active if you have an old Gmail account that you haven’t used in more than two years. Your account will be deleted including photos if you fail to do so. Google says they may also delete accounts and data from Google Workspaces, including Gmail Docs, Drive, Meet, and Calendar. To retain these, you simply need to log into your Google account.

Important note for Photos: You will need to specifically log into your Google Photos account once every two years in order to avoid deletion of its contents.

Google wants to take a “phased approach,” so it will start with “accounts that were created and never used again” before deleting accounts that may have simply been forgotten or neglected. However, accounts won’t begin being deleted until December 2023. Google says that they will send out numerous emails to both the primary account email address and the recovery address, where available, leading up to any potential deletion.

To keep your account “active,” Google suggests that you periodically log in and interact with services like Gmail, YouTube, Drive, Photos, and so on. You should also set a recovery email for any accounts that you care about (Google will pester you about this during login).

Note that accounts tied to an Android phone are considered active, as are those that maintain a Google One subscription.

HINT: I set a reminder to send an email from all my email accounts on a monthly basis.
