TECH TIP: GOOGLE VOICE

Google Voice is a convenient and FREE phone service that allows users to set up a separate phone number for specific purposes and manage their calls. It offers important phone capabilities such as call management, text messaging, voicemail with transcription, spam call detection, and call history. Google Voice uses VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol).

What is Google Voice?

  • A phone number people can make and receive calls.
  • The ability to send text messages (SMS) to compatible numbers.
  • A visual voicemail platform that includes transcription.
  • Spam call detection and automatic blocking options.
  • Call history.

Why use Google Voice?

On the personal side, Google Voice is suitable as a contact for a job, gig, or volunteer position that you don't want using your personal phone number.

How many loyalty cards now use your phone number instead of your email address? So, by giving them your Google Voice phone number instead of your personal mobile or home phone, you are further protecting your identity's security.

What devices does Google Voice work with?

Google Voice is a highly optimized service. It can work across Android phones, Apple devices (iPhones, iPads, Macs), and many kinds of computers. You shouldn't have to worry about compatibility with your devices.

Notes:

  • Free for domestic calls, international calls can be costly. The good news is that Google has a cheat sheet where you can look up the rate per minute for a specific country.
  • You can forward your Google Voice Calls to the phone number of your choice, so you do not have to worry about missing calls. Personally, I forward my Google Voice calls to my mobile number.
  • Google Voice also receives voicemails and text messages which are easy to view in their App or Website.
  • Practice making and receiving a call as it can be a bit tricky in the beginning because Google Voice masks your phone number.
