Personal Data Breaches On The Rise
In the last issue of Tech Talk News, we discussed a report from MIT that indicated an ever-increasing rate of attacks and the need to encrypt data. That issue can be located on our website for reference if you'd like to review it. This report also indicated that there was also a particularly strong increase in attacks targeting personal data rather than organizational data.
That doesn't necessarily mean that organizations are off the hook, however. Just look at how often people access business data from non-organizational devices. If a personal device were to be compromised, there may be access to organizational email, files, etc. available to whoever has gotten on the device. This may be a very common case for the computers we all carry around - cell phones.
What Can Be Done?
Unfortunately, more and more organizations are realizing this problem that has no strong or clear-cut solution. For many organizations, the most effective way for them to try and handle this issue is to purchase phones for employees or pay for employee phones. This allows them to have programs on the phone that allow for things to be done like remotely wiping company data if a phone is lost or stolen so that organizational data can be protected.
Others have implemented organizational policies that are intended to limit access to such systems to only organization-owned devices.
Some choose to implement both options. It's really all dependent upon the position the organization is in what may be the smoothest or strongest solution.
If organizational data on personal devices is something you'd like to discuss with our team, please feel free to reach out. We will gladly assist in mapping out what may be the most effective options for you.
