MDR: What Is It?
In the world of IT, there are already plenty of acronyms to go around. Of late, MDR has been one of the most commonly-appearing ones. Whether it's a briefing from CISA, from the SEC, a form from a cyber insurance broker, etc. many IT-related documents coming out over the past year or so have started to include the MDR buzzword. But what does that mean?
What is MDR?
Well, Managed Detection and Response (MDR) is a comprehensive cybersecurity service that combines advanced threat detection, incident response, and continuous monitoring to safeguard organizations against cyber threats. Essentially it is a proactive approach to cyber security that occurs in real-time. It’s a service that is reviewing activity on the network around the clock and can prevent and/or limit damages from attacks even if they find a way onto the network.
What are the benefits?
MDR provides extended coverage beyond traditional antivirus software and even beyond UTMs. It also allows for much quicker cleanup in the event of any issue: Without MDR, a threat that breaks out during off-hours may go unnoticed until someone sees they can’t get their files and by that time the whole network is infected and needs to be brought down to be cleaned up. With MDR, the monitoring team can see the threat much quicker to isolate the exposed areas and begin cleanup before anyone would normally have noticed.
Perhaps the biggest push for MDR, however, is compliance/industry regulations and standards. It’s something that’s burst onto the scene and many regulated areas (and even some cyber insurance vendors) have begun to push it more heavily to the point they may one day make is a requirement.
