IMPORTANT DATES AND INFORMATION

CONGRATULATIONS,
Emergency Dispatch Communicators (PD)!
| |
|
Last week, the department along with other public safety answering points across the country are celebrating National Telecommunicator Week (April 14-20). Through a 1994 Presidential Proclamation, Telecommunicator Week occurs the second full week of April each year to recognize the immeasurable and crucial work dispatchers perform on a daily basis. The Largo Police Department has 22 dispatchers, 4 supervisors and 1 manager when fully staffed. The department is considered the centralized hub for answering incoming emergency and non-emergency calls for the City of Largo. In 2023, the agency handled over 158,000 calls. Dispatchers must undergo a tedious training curriculum (720 hours) in addition to passing a state certification exam - all within their first year of hire. Our dispatchers must also complete a minimum of 24 hours of continuing education on a bi-annual basis to remain state certified. Dispatchers must be extremely focused, have a strong attention to detail, display patience and empathy, be able to multi-task and engage with citizens who are typically experiencing a difficult or traumatic event. In addition to handling calls, our dispatchers are also tasked with assisting our officers by dispatching them to calls for service, monitoring their status and location, sending help when it's needed while remaining calm during these dangerous or critical incidents. Our dispatchers are the true "heroes behind the headset"; always heard, but never seen. Each and every one of these brave men and women deserve to receive an iWOW for their hard work and dedication to public safety and serving their community. Thank you for all you do!!!

2025 STRATEGIC PLAN UPDATE
The City of Largo’s first comprehensive Strategic Plan was established in 2017. With a focus on public health and safety, sustainability, and community pride, the organization began a transformative journey to high performance. We can collectively celebrate many successes five years after the plan’s launch.
|
|
The initial plan has served the organization as a guide for operations, focusing on collective goals. It is best practice to periodically evaluate and update a strategic plan, validating it along the way. During an all-day retreat in early 2024, City Commissioners established a consensus to evaluate and refresh the organization’s Strategic Plan.
City Administration will take steps in the immediate future to begin updating the Strategic Plan, including allocating resources and assigning roles. Key milestones and a timeline will be developed to kick off the project officially. Team members and community engagement will be critical to refining and adopting an updated plan to present a comprehensive and concise Strategic Plan to the Commission for review by 2025.
Stay tuned for updates in the MMB and on TeamLargo.com.
