"Teaching Kids To Fish Is Fun"
--Larry Hayes, CEO/Publisher A050

Last week teaching kids how to fish was the most fun I've had since the pandemic in March. Hosted by my fishing club—BASF (Bay Area SportFishers), Pete Sasur and myself met Siraj, his wife and two children at the Campbell Perc Ponds in Campbell, CA.

New members of BASF, Siraj and family are originally from Chennai, India where I taught health and agriculture from 1968-70 as a teacher in the Peace Corps.

Chennai, formerly called Madras, is also where I met and married Gloria,
my darling Anglo Indian wife of 52 years. Our beautiful and talented daughter Charm is, of course, mixed--half Indian, half American—the best that East and West has to offer.

So meeting Siraj and family for fishing lessons brought back many fond memories of India which I consider as my second home. India and the
Peace Corps completely changed my life.

Because of my experience as a Peace Corps volunteer in India, I won a full scholarship as a graduate student to study Literacy Journalism at Syracuse University, New York where I graduated with a MA in Mass Communications.

Fast forward--move to California; work in marketing for several high tech companies; launch my own marketing firm Hayes Marketing Communications; launch ActiveOver50 media at age 65 for boomers and seniors; shift to digital publishing last year with a new, monthly, online publication,"The Scoop."

At age 81, still working, playing USTA tennis, running BASF and teaching kids how to fish as a fun way of giving back to a life-long hobby that my father taught me growing up as a youngster in Whitewater, KS.

Not only did Pete and I teach Siraj's son (10) and daughter (7) how to fish,
we also taught Siraj and his wife the basics of fishing. They even caught some bass after the lessons! Fast learners. Good teaching helps, of course!

"Is It Safe To Move Into Assisted Living Communities?"
--TS, San Jose, CA
Unfortunately, Assisted Living Communities have been lumped together with Nursing Homes as unsafe and dangerous places to live during this pandemic with over 59,000 deaths reported in nursing homes nationwide.

"Guilt by association" is unfair. Nursing homes harbor our most frail facing end-of-life health issues. Assisted Living residents require some form of daily assistance but remain independent.

A recent survey conducted by ActiveOver50 reveals that ALs are now "open for business" and taking on new residents with many safety measures in place to prevent further outbreaks of COVID-19.

• Residents are no longer quarantined in their apartments
• Meals are being served in the dining room
• Family and friends allowed to visit
• Common areas open
• Daily activities happening
• In-person and virtual tours

Note: Strict safety precautions remain in effect including daily temperature
checks of staff and residents, PPE, mask wearing and 6 ft. distancing. If you'd like
my list of assisted living communities meeting these new safety protocols, please contact me.

The Flu
Season
Is Here

The doctors at Physicians Medical Group of San Jose believe
it is more important than ever to get your flu vaccine this year. Influenza is a potentially serious disease that can lead
to hospitalization and sometimes even death.

An annual seasonal flu vaccine is the best way to help protect against flu. Vaccination has many benefits, including:

  • Keeping you from getting sick with the flu.
  • Reducing the severity of illness in people who get vaccinated but still get sick.
  • Reducing the risk of flu-associated hospitalization.
  • Protecting women during, and after, pregnancy.
  • Being a preventative tool for people with chronic health conditions.
And getting vaccinated yourself may also protect people around you, including those who are more vulnerable to serious flu illness, like babies and young children, older people and people with certain chronic health conditions.

What's New
With Annuities?
--Evelyn Preston, The Money Lady

Over the years, many advisors, myself included, have increasingly cautioned against annuities. Originally considered as a safe and sure financial vehicle for retirement income, the high fees, surrender charges and design confusion have questioned their transparency and tarnished their reputation.

According to author Jack Sharry in a recent Financial Advisor magazine, annuities have come of age, teaming with high tech to become simpler, competitive, cost-effective and with
a measurable value as part of an overall financial portfolio.

Q: What’s so new about annuities?
New offerings are integrated with tech-enabled platforms. These coordinate with overall financial and retirement planning. Their digital partners are eMoney, MoneyGuidePro, Morningstar and several other online programs.

Q: Which companies offer these latest tech-enhanced annuities?
Well-known and respected names Allianz and Jackson National are at the forefront of this “sea change” with uniquely designed annuities and dedicated teams to support a consultative approach that offer the training and specialized tools to support advisors and enhance outcomes.

Q: How does the cost and effectiveness of annuities now compare with a fee based, managed portfolio?
The biggest change according to the article is the ability of modern annuities to fill specific needs at a price to match fee-based, managed money. They are just one tool used for accumulation and income needs. The oft-cited annuity strengths of tax advantages and protection of principal can now offer protection from volatile markets via high-tech programs to improve financial outcome, lower costs, minimize taxes and maximize Social Security benefits.

Q: How do these tech-enhanced annuities address risk while improving returns?

Following the Dept. of Labor’s recently enacted fiduciary standards and best market rules, insurance companies worked to make annuities cost-competitive. And the improved use of these Fintech partnerships now have a major role in addressing risk-reward, tax-enhancement and back office/ease-of-use experience. This mandated transparency can now show how annuities work to truly manage risk, and they offer a wide array of options for the clear benefit of the client.

YOUR LOCAL
REVERSE
MORTGAGE
PROFESSIONAL
With over 15 years experience right here in Silicon
Valley, I can answer all your questions.

Will The Bank Own My Home?

The bank does not take ownership of your home; they simply extend a loan to you. You continue to own and live in your home and are responsible for payment of property taxes, required insurance and if applicable, HOA fees

Do My Children/Family Members Lose Their Inheritance?

No, a borrower may designate an heir of their choosing. The heir(s) will inherit the home after the last surviving borrower passes away and may then choose to keep (by paying off the amount of reverse mortgage balance) or sell the home. Should they choose to sell, any remaining equity after paying off the loan (minus interest and fees) would be theirs.
