Eugenics in the law, your food and movies

'Eugenics is the scientifically erroneous and immoral theory of "racial improvement" and "planned breeding," which gained popularity during the early 20th century. Eugenicists worldwide believed that they could perfect human beings and eliminate so-called social ills through genetics and heredity.' Eugenics positioned Black people as natural breeders of poverty, crime, mental and intellectual weakness, and national impurity.

This is a rare screening of the film by actor and director Zózimo Bulbul, a key figure in the progressive, political Black movement in Brazil, who worked with renowned filmmakers such as Glauber Rocha (Black God, White Devil) and Ola Balogun (Black Goddess). This epic documentary marks 135 years since slavery was abolished in Brazil, on 13 May 1888 (Abolition Act Day). Combining archive material and interviews with historians, government ministers, artists, sports people and street-dwellers, it presents a complex portrait of the Black experience over the course of the last century.

Black History Walks has over 20 years’ experience managing film exhibitions and talks. The African Odysseys film programme at the British Film Institute is the only one of its kind in the country. In our 112th Queen Nzingha lecture, (updated to reflect current US reproductive politics) Dr. Shantella Sherman will explore the science of eugenics and its relation to current theories about Black women's bodies, including their character, aptitude, morality, and social fitness. Above: Black Teacher, short lecture by Dean Darla Gilroy (Central School St Martins) on her pioneering mother Dr Beryl Gilroy. Dr Gilroy was one of the first Black Headteachers in London and wrote the ground-breaking book Black Teacher in 1976.
