Tay Township News & Notes

March 2024

Message from the Mayor

Spring has finally arrived, bringing with it warmer weather and the start of a busy season for Tay Township!

The month of March started with a very important campaign. Tay Township was once again proud to join the County of Simcoe to promote the #ITSTARTS campaign. The program is designed to take a proactive step towards addressing racism and discrimination in Simcoe County. I encourage you all to visit the County of Simcoe website for more resources.

I was also able to attend a very special event at the Tay Community Rink. Council and staff gathered to say thank you and recognize the $316,500 Community Building fund-capital grant from the provincial government's Ontario Trillium Foundation. Funds from the grant were used to convert the Rink’s storage room into changerooms, including additional accessible washrooms and shower facilities. A special thank you to Leslie Stroud, Constituency Assistant to the Hon. Jill Dunlop, MPP for Simcoe North who was in attendance. We are committed to preserving this space and ensuring it remains accessible for many community activities over the course of the year. For more information on the Tay Community Rink please visit tay.ca/rink.

With the change in seasons, our winter parking regulations come to an end on April 1. Our roads crew now shift their focus to street sweeping and filling potholes, as well as maintenance work on the Tay Shore Trail. For more information on these seasonal operations, you can visit tay.ca/news or tay.ca/construction.

Lastly, a reminder that our Municipal Office will be closed on Friday, March 29th and Monday, April 1st for the Easter Holiday and will reopen on Tuesday, April 2nd at 8:30 a.m. For after-hour emergency service for Water, Wastewater, Roads and Parks please call 705-526-5762. The Tay Township Public Library will also have amended holiday hours, please visit tay.ca/library for more information.

I look forward to the month ahead and wish everyone a safe and happy Easter weekend.

Until next time, Mayor Ted Walker twalker@tay.ca.

Tay Township Releases 2023 Digital Year in Review

This review offers a captivating visual snapshot of the Township’s progress, accomplishments, and initiatives throughout the past year.

The inclusion of this review helps support the goal set out by Council in the Strategic Plan, to increase communication between the Township and residents. This review helps reaffirm the Township’s mission, to deliver responsive and cost-effective municipal services and infrastructure that provide for the long-term economic, social and environmental well-being of our residents and community.

The review will be made available digitally on the Tay Township website at tay.ca/YearinReview, paper copies will be made available at the Township Municipal Office and Tay Township Public Library branches.

Township Approves 2024 Budget

On March 21, 2024 Tay Township Council approved the Township’s 2024 budget that includes $11.7 million in taxation and $6.4 million in water & wastewater rates and levies.

Tay Township’s municipal tax increase for 2024 is 4.56%. The overall residential property tax bill impact for 2024, including County and Education taxes, is estimated at a 3.76% increase over 2023. For a median single-family detached residence in Tay Township assessed at $219,000 this will mean an estimated increase of $7.82/month.

The Township’s annual budget also includes funding from reserves, grants, development charges and investments which all contribute to funding municipal services and construction projects. In 2024 Tay has planned to undertake $35.2 million in capital projects. While water rates have remained the same in 2024 as they were in 2023, wastewater system users have seen a 4.1% increase to rates or $3.50/month for a single-family home.

Mayor Ted Walker noted that “Council and staff have diligently collaborated to develop a budget that delivers to the needs of our residents. Council is confident that a balance has been achieved and remains dedicated to seeking efficiencies and innovations for the benefit of our community.”
