Tay Township News & Notes

April 2024

Message from the Mayor

As we bid farewell to April, I want to express my gratitude to everyone who contributed to a fantastic month filled with community spirit and participation. We kicked off the month by raising flags in recognition of two significant causes, BeADonor Month and Autism Awareness Day

Amidst our celebratory spirit, we encountered a 16-hour power outage in Port McNicoll and surrounding areas. My sincere thanks to NT Power for their swift cleanup and restoration efforts, and our Tay Township Fire Department and Township Staff for their proactive measures, including door-to-door notifications and the operation of the warming centre, ensuring the safety and well-being of our residents during this disruption.

The power outage served as a timely reminder of the importance of planning ahead for disasters. I encourage all residents to review the requirements for filling out the Accessibility and Functional Needs Registry as part of your Emergency Preparedness Plan. The information gathered will be used to alert public safety responders (police, fire, and EMS) that an individual residing at a specific address has a disability that may hinder evacuation or transport. People on the registry can be contacted by public safety responders when an emergency event is anticipated to make sure their plans are in place and to provide information from trusted, verified, and vetted emergency officials. For more information on this please visit tay.ca/AFNR.

On April 20, Council and Staff hosted a special lunch to honour and celebrate our invaluable volunteers for their selfless contributions to our community. This special event coincided with National Volunteer Week. Our volunteers are the heart and soul of our Township, and we are grateful for all that they do.

Throughout April, we encouraged residents and community groups to participate in various clean-up efforts throughout the Township. On April 25, Council and Staff came together to clean up the area surrounding the Municipal Office and along sections of Park Street. It was an inspiring event filled with teamwork, laughter, and positive impact as we collected and disposed of litter, making our community even more beautiful.

A reminder that 2024 Albert Street Boat Launch Trailer Parking Permits are available for residents and property owners in Tay Township. Permits are available at the Municipal Office during regular business hours, and our Municipal Law Enforcement Officers will also have a kiosk set up at the Victoria Harbour boat launch on Saturday, May 11, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Residents are encouraged to fill out the online form at tay.ca/boatlaunch ahead of time to expedite the process.

Lastly, our local community groups have been busy planning events in Tay for the Spring/Summer season so be sure to visit tay.ca/events for updates! Registration for the popular Tay Summer Camp and TOTS Soccer opens May 3 at 8:30 a.m. To view the programs, visit tay.ca/register. Programs fill up fast so please register early!

Watermain Flushing 2024

Municipal water users are advised of the flushing or swabbing of drinking

watermains:

Flushing Schedule: Monday to Friday only between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

  • Waubaushene Area – complete
  • Rope Subdivision Area – complete
  • Victoria Harbour – beginning April 29 to May 17
  • Port McNicoll/Midland Bay Woods – beginning May 20 to June 7

As a result of this work, you may experience a change in pressure and/or some discolouration, sediment in the water, or perhaps even no water for short periods of time. Should you experience discoloured water, following a flushing event, run your cold water for 10-15 minutes to clear the service line. If the water does not clear after this time, turn off the tap and wait 30 minutes and repeat the process.

Water use during the scheduled flushing periods should be kept to a minimum to avoid discolouration from entering your home or business. During these times, it is advisable to check the water prior to doing laundry.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Ontario Clean Water Agency at 1-866-775-7712.
