Friends,
In a move that surprises no one, Bev Perdue today announced her first attempt to hike taxes in the new year. Seventeen days in.
Her latest "temporary" sales tax is a reincarnation of the tax she first proposed in 2009, promised would sunset in 2011 ("Because she's the governor."), then fought, unsuccessfully, to reinstate in the 2012 budget.
This is the Perdue tax hike that will not die.
The Republican State Senate and House successfully eliminated the last temporary sales tax, keeping Perdue's promise for her. Perdue then vetoed the tax-killing budget and demanded that the tax hike be reinserted, but Republican legislators overrode her veto. Fortunately, the Republican State Senate has blocked the governor's tax-and-spend agenda and will continue to fight for fiscal sanity and private sector job creation.
Senate President Pro Tempore Phil Berger (R-Rockingham) had this to say about Perdue's tax increase:
"Obviously, Gov. Perdue's attempt to nip this economic recovery in the bud is dead on arrival at the General Assembly. The Democratic primary for governor apparently has devolved into a fight over who can raise the most taxes, spend the most money, and grow the biggest government. Gov. Perdue's latest tax-hike stunt proves she can't fix this mess she made."
