Acupuncture for Rebalancing your Body in preparation for a change of Season
The first half of August is the ending of summer, which involves the heart and small intestine (fire element) and the second half of August is the beginning of late summer, which involves the lungs and large intestine (metal element). As the weather starts to cool down and the body is no longer under the stress of excessive heat, it's the perfect time to detox. The time right before harvest is a great time to clear the body of all the excessive heat and dampness from the intensity of summer.
During August, along with all of summer, Chrysanthemum and mint tea are great options to reduce heat out of the body. This is a very important time to build your immune system to prepare for flu season. Schedule an appointment for acupuncture today and/or an herbal consultation to help balance your body.

COVID is surging again this summer in Maryland, hospitalization and wastewater data shows
By Angela Roberts | aroberts@baltsun.com | Baltimore Sun
UPDATED: July 25, 2024 at 9:17 p.m.
The state is seeing the biggest spike in COVID levels in its wastewater — or sewage — since early January, according to data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. There were “very high” levels of viral activity, nearly double national levels, measured in the state’s wastewater as of last week.
Hospitalizations from the virus also have more than doubled in the past month — from 60 on June 22 to 135 on Monday, according to data from the Maryland Department of Health — although they remain far below what they were in January, during what has become an annual winter surge.
At Sinai Hospital in Baltimore, emergency room doctors are seeing a slight spike in patients with COVID, although most have mild — if uncomfortable — symptoms like fever, body aches, fatigue, vomiting and diarrhea that don’t require hospitalization, said Dr. Gregory Corcoran, director of the hospital’s emergency department and system director for LifeBridge Health.
By now, a fairly consistent cycle has emerged in the yearly spread of COVID. Hospitalizations start trending upward in the late summer, a trend that continues through the fall and winter, until it peaks in early January. Since the start of 2022, when a nasty omicron surge sent thousands to the hospital, each year’s peak has been lower than the previous year’s peak.

Hearing Aids May Lower the Risk of Cognitive Decline
For people whose hearing is impaired, hearing aids may lower the risk of cognitive decline. Still, many resist getting them. Advice from specialists may help overcome that reluctance.
June/July 2024
By Robert Firpo-Cappiello
Recent evidence of the cognitive benefits of treating hearing loss includes a National Institutes of Health–funded study, published in August 2023 in The Lancet, involving 1,000 adults between the ages of 70 and 84. The primary results of the study showed that participants who wore hearing aids did not see improved cognition, but a secondary analysis of data, focused on a sub-group of participants at increased risk of cognitive decline, found that wearing hearing aids was linked to a slowing of cognitive decline over the course of three years.
Poor hearing does not cause cognitive decline, but untreated, it can trigger behavior that may have a negative impact on cognitive health. “Hearing loss often results in reduced social interaction, less verbal stimulation and communication, loneliness, and depression,” says neuro-otologist Terry D. Fife, MD, FAAN, professor of neurology at the University of Arizona College of Medicine in Phoenix. “In people who are already experiencing cognitive decline, the effects of social isolation may accelerate that.” A study published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society in January 2023 suggested that the risk of dementia was 28 percent higher when older adults were socially isolated.
“I regularly hear from my patients and their family members how they enjoy socializing again because they can understand and participate in conversations,” says Dr. Lin. “They feel connected because they can speak to loved ones on the telephone with more ease, and they report less exhaustion because they aren't constantly straining to understand.”
“Untreated hearing loss can distort speech and sound signals by the time they reach the brain, demanding additional effort from the brain to process them,” Dr. Lin says. “Consequently, fewer cognitive resources are available for tasks like thinking and memory, as well as for mitigating the impact of conditions like Alzheimer's disease, diabetes, and heart disease, which can further exacerbate the risk of cognitive decline and dementia.”
Other factors that may influence your choice of hearing aid include the power source (rechargeable or battery-operated), Bluetooth capability, and whether it has a telecoil (which improves sound transmission in public venues).
“If hearing aids don't work well, they end up on a shelf,” says Dr. Fife. “When they truly help, most people will wear hearing aids diligently.”

6 Downsizing Tips for Baby Boomers to Simplify and Enrich Retirement
How to navigate the downsizing process and unlock the many benefits it offers
By Acts Retirement-Life Communities
June 3, 2024
1. Plan Early and Gradually
Don't wait until retirement to tackle downsizing. Begin planning a few years in advance to avoid feeling overwhelmed. Start by decluttering a room or tackling a specific category of belongings, like clothes or books. This allows you to ease into the process and make thoughtful decisions about what to keep, donate or sell.
2. Embrace Sentimentality — But Be Selective
Downsizing doesn't have to mean sacrificing cherished memories. Focus on keeping items that hold true sentimental value and evoke positive emotions. For example, consider creating a memory box with photos or heirlooms instead of holding onto bulky furniture.
4. Think Multi-Functional Furniture
When selecting furniture for your new home, prioritize pieces that serve multiple purposes. Ottomans with storage compartments, space-saving sofas and nesting tables can maximize functionality in a smaller space.
5. Sell or Donate Unwanted Items
There are many ways to give unwanted items a second life. Consider online marketplaces, consignment shops or garage sales to sell belongings. Donation centers also provide a way to declutter while supporting worthy causes.
6. Focus on the Positive Impact
Downsizing isn't just about getting rid of stuff — it's about creating a space that reflects your current lifestyle and future aspirations. Think about how a smaller home could free up your time and money for the things you truly enjoy in retirement, such as travel, hobbies or spending time with loved ones.

Great Gluten Free Breakfast alternative
Oats are not for everyone and if you are trying to reduce or cut out grains from your diet then breakfast can be a nightmare.
Step in the Amaranth Seed.
A protein packed powerhouse, Amaranth contains more than three times the average amount of calcium and is also high in iron, magnesium, phosphorus, and potassium. It’s also the only grain documented to contain Vitamin C..pretty impressive stuff right!
As with all porridge this couldn’t be simpler to make.
You simply combine the amaranth with all the ingredients in a small pan and bring to a gentle bubble on the stove. I know that at first it will seem like a lot of liquid to the amount of Amaranth but thees little seeds really soak up the juice. So be liberal.
Keep it on a low bubble and give it the occasional stir to stop it from sticking and so you can adjust the liquid if you need to. You may find that you will want to add a splash more almond milk to stop it from becoming too thick.
It will take about 20 mins for the porridge to cook through.
- 1 cup organic amaranth seeds
- 2 1/2 cups goat milk, coconut milk, almond milk, water, or a combination
- 1 teaspoon raw honey or pure maple syrup, plus more as desired
- 1/2–1 teaspoon cinnamon and vanilla
- chia seeds, walnuts, and summer stone fruit
YUM!
