DOERS OF THE WORD
____________________
The book of James was written by Jesus’ half-brother. It is full of wisdom. In James 1:22-24 it says, “But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. 23 For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: [mirror] 24 For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.”
We can read the word of God, and even study it, but if we do not do what it tells us we are deceiving ourselves.
Recently I spoke with an individual and he could quote scriptures faster than I could speak, yet he was not a Christian. Quoting scripture does not make us a Christian. By not acting on the word of God, we are simply looking in a mirror and seeing our natural selves. We walk away unchanged.
When we see ourselves through the mirror of the word of God and it convicts us of our sin, and we repent, then we are not just hearers of the word, we are doers.
There are many church goers that never open their bibles. Some do not even have a bible. Most do not know how many books are in the entire bible. They are deceived into thinking that they are all right with God. They are not. One must not just have a bible; one must use it.
It would be like a man wanting to dig a hole and has a shovel, but never uses the shovel to dig the hole. It will not get dug by itself. Likewise, just because we have a bible does not mean a thing unless we read it and act upon it. Be a doer of the word my friend, not just a hearer.
