Greetings!
Welcome to the latest edition of the TTF Lucky 7! The purpose of this short letter is to inform the TTF nation of the Top 7 baits that are producing for our customers and pro-staffers throughout the Gulf Coast.
We combine sales figures from our retailers and online store with reports from the field to come up with our 'Lucky 7' list. It always helps to know what's 'hot' in your local waters, and we hope this helps you when you're stocking your tackle box for your next outing in the salt.
Here's what's been hot lately...
|
1. Hackberry Hustler: all colors
|
The Hackberry Hustler is flying off shelves at retailers and online stores throughout the Gulf Coast region. Anglers from bay systems far and wide are discovering the versatility of this fish-catching soft-plastic.
If we were simply going by the numbers, the Hustler would take up every slot of our Lucky 7 list this month. So instead of filling the Lucky 7 with just one bait, we'll put the Hustler in the No. 1 slot and tell you which colors are hot right now: 1. HH-271 - WHO DAT? 2. HH-268 - Geaux Gleaux 3. HH-203 - Pumpkinseed/Chartreuse 4. HH-208 - LSU 5. HH-270 - Opening Night
New retailers are adding the Hustler every day - so keep an eye on the shelves at your local shop. If your favorite tackle store still doesn't have the Hustler in stock, send us an E-mail and let us know. We'll do what we can to get them on shelves near you.
We've had a lot of questions about when the Hustler will hit the pegs at Academy. As of now, Academy has ordered 10 colors of this bait and plans to put them on shelves in EARLY SEPTEMBER.

2. Double Shad Rigs: all colors
|
The summer sun is scorching hot and the water temperatures in many coastal bays seems hot enough to fry fish in. It's this time of year that many savvy anglers pass on fishing in the heat and gear up to go at it during the dark, instead. That's why it's no surprise to see our Double Shad Rigs so high on the Lucky 7 list this time around. These little shad rigs are absolutely deadly under the lights! The small size and unmatched durability of our Shad Rigs makes them a favorite for night-fishing die-hards. |
3. Shad Rig Replacements: all colors
|
When the rigs are hot, so are the bodies. Many anglers are unaware that they can buy bulk packs of our shad bodies. Don't spend your hard-earned money on a bunch of pre-made rigs. A handful of rigs and a couple packs of our replacement shad bodies will get you through many nights of wearing out the specks off your favorite pier. Our 2-inch bodies come in packs of 18 and our 3-inch bodies can be purchased in packs of 14. We get reports all the time of anglers catching over 10 fish on a single plastic, so one pack of these little guys can last you a long time. |
4. Trout Killer: glo/chartreuse
|
The specks are locked into their summertime pattern and are congregating near deep-water structure and areas of strong current. It's conditions like these that the Trout Killer was designed for. If you put the Trout Killer on a 1/4-ounce jighead its rapid sink rate will take it down to depths where the trout are hiding to escape the summer heat. You can also put it on a lighter head or rig it weightless in strong current and let it flutter naturally around fish-holding structure like reefs, jetty rocks and bridge or pier pilings. The only wrong way to fish this bait is if you leave it at the dock - so tie one on get to catching! |
5. BIG MINO: pumpkinseed/white/chartreuse
|
Many anglers think larger baits are reserved only for use during the winter months, but that's not the case. Right now the fish's metabolisms are in high gear, and they need to scarf down a lot of morsels throughout the day to keep themselves going. Often times, fish will take a larger offering if they can have it without expending too much energy. It's always a good idea to match the hatch with the size of your bait, but if you find yourself in the middle of a feeding frenzy not getting bites, try throwing something with a bigger profile and see if that does the trick. The BIG MINO checks in at the No. 5 spot this week, so obviously it's still catching fish lots of anglers |
6. Lil' Speck Killers: all colors
|
Another nighttime favorite, the Lil' Speck Killer, sneaks into the No. 6 spot this month. Many anglers favor either the Shad Rig or the Lil' Speck Killer for fishing lights, but they're actually very different baits that can be used for different purposes. The straight-tail design on the Lil' Speck Killer gives it a faster sink rate than the Shad Rig. So if you find that your constantly getting bit by small fish on the Shad Rig, sometimes switching to the Lil' Speck Killer will allow you to get your bait past smaller fish feeding near the top of the water column to larger fish down below. Likewise, when fish are lethargic or want a slower presentation, the Shad Rig is the better option. Another note worth mentioning is that the Lil' Speck Killer is available in a huge array of colors and combinations - whereas the Shad Rig is limited to pearl and chartreuse. If you're serious about fishing the lights, it's a good idea to have them both in your tackle box. |
7. Ready Rig Shark Leader
|
There's no better time of year than right now to grab your gear and head to the beach in search of toothy critters. Sharks are running the surf zone in full force, and there's nothing more exciting or memorable than fighting a nice-sized shark with your feet planted firmly in the sand. A day of shark fishing can be an expensive outing if you try to buy all the gear you need piece by piece. Then you have to make all your leaders and prepare you bait and rods... take all that hassle out of the equation by stocking up on some of our Ready Rig Shark Leaders. These 72-inch long heavy-duty wire leaders come equipped with a beefy 9/0 Mustad hook and are ready to fish right out of the package. Simply tie it on, add some fresh bait and hold on! |
