After much discussion, the Urban Redevelopment Authority of Pittsburgh (URA) delayed a vote today on the much-anticipated Lower Hill Redevelopment project. But the board did endorse initiatives that will bring a new mixed-use development to the Strip District, add affordable housing in Highland Park and help recently incarcerated students in Homewood with living space while they train for new jobs.
Stay tuned to NEXT for more details on the Lower Hill.
In the meantime, here are a few key takeaways from the eventful URA meeting:...

A neighborhood that used to be more than half vacant celebrated the ribbon cutting on Thursday for 150 brand new apartments and townhouses, part of a development that will ultimately include more than double that number of units in the city's latest public-private community-building effort.
About 100 tenants, community leaders, and government officials gathered for the ceremony that played on the Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood theme, complete with tours in a bus refurbished as a trolley car, a few Postal Service carriers and school children.
“We’re over the 50-yard line now,” Mayor Bill Peduto said. “This is a model every neighborhood now wants. … It was a vision by the people of the neighborhood who believed in the potential and pulled the state, the city, the county, the housing authority and then the federal government all together.”...

When Tracey Evans looks at the Wilkinsburg Train Station, she doesn’t see it in its current, dilapidated state. She pictures what once was, and what soon will be.
Like much of the borough, this 104-year-old building is being restored to its former glory. When the $6.5 million construction project wraps up at the end of the year, the Beaux-Arts landmark will boast terrazzo and mosaic tile floors, polished stone pilasters and panels, a clock tower, all new utilities and restrooms, and 8,400 square feet of leasable space.
“It’s been vacant since 1965,” says Evans, executive director of the Wilkinsburg Community Development Corporation. “The WCDC has always considered its restoration a key goal for our Main Street revitalization.”...

Downtown’s newest boutique is actually a tattoo parlor, at least in the legal sense.
Speaking to NEXTpittsburgh, 306 Forbes Boutique & Brow Bar’s co-owner Lisa Wolfson explains that her business partner, Jojo Sanchez, has many talents, including certification in microblading. It’s a beauty process in which small injections of semipermanent pigment are added to the skin under the eyebrows.
While the process is common and increasingly popular around the world, under Pennsylvania state law Sanchez was unable to add the service to her existing salon on Forbes Avenue, Cardamone’s...

The Pittsburgh Penguins’ latest bid to start the redevelopment of the old Civic Arena site in the lower Hill District has hit a patch of rough ice.
Pittsburgh Urban Redevelopment Authority board members tabled a vote Thursday on actions related to the construction of the first 288 units of housing, a live music venue and a parking garage after protests by some Hill leaders and residents.
During a lengthy discussion, they raised concerns about some aspects of the latest deal and complained about not having any time to review the details. The term sheet outlining the various aspects related to the developments was not available until the meeting...

The big, white building at 1700 Penn Ave. in the Strip District is about to get a makeover: By the end of the year, the 6,000-square-foot space will open as a shared spot featuring a Pennsylvania Libations retail store along with a full-service bar and taproom serving Helltown beer and much more.
At 1700 Penn — the umbrella name for the two businesses — the store will sell bottles and cans from more than 25 of the state’s top wineries, cideries and meaderies, with the option to taste before you buy. The 90-seat taproom will sell growlers and cans of Helltown and Rivertowne beer, and customers can sit down for a pint.
This full-service bar area will be run by Pennsylvania Libations. Along with beer, cider and mead, it will be stocked with more than 150 different spirits and 200 wines from across the Commonwealth, which are also available at the Pennsylvania Libations store down the street at 2103 Penn Ave...

PITTSBURGH (KDKA)– When most people think about solar energy, they assume it is limited to the sunny south. Few understand that it will work in Pennsylvania where we don’t have as many sunny days — and a project along the banks of the Mon River is trying to change the public perception.
The installation of thousands of solar panels at Mill 19 at the Hazelwood Green project started about ten days ago. When they are finished next year, the entire roof will be covered. It is going to be gigantic because the old steel mill is about a third of a mile long...
