YOGA vs OSTEOPOROSIS

at

KRIPALU

FRIDAY, JUNE 7th - SUNDAY, JUNE 9th

9 hrs. CEU - IAYT

This weekend in-person workshop will go over all three versions of the First Series, the one proven to build bone in people with osteopenia and osteoporosis, and strengthen healthy bone as well.

While teaching Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced renditions of each pose, we will also show cues and 'tricks' to make the poses more effective. We are currently testing whether in some case the Beginner or Intermediate levels of a few poses may be more effective in bone-building than the Classical poses! But we aren't sure yet. Still, we'll show you a few of these as well as filling you in on some of the insightful research of the last 10 years.

MODEST NEEDS

Since announcing this a few weeks ago, we've collected $4,268, eighty-four percent of our "absolute needs" for the

charitable program.

Approved at the

Amrita Institute of Medical Science's

"AIMS"

Charitable Hospital in Kerala.

(1350 beds)

The next step is for Liz and me to teach the teachers there.

The 240 patient study is the largest randomized controlled study of our method outside of the United States. Our hope is that it will be adopted by many other institutions.

Farah Shroff, Ph.D. (United Nations liason and fellow at TH Chan School of Public Health at Harvard), and professors of Endocrinology and Rehabilitation Priya Nair, MD, Ravi Sankaran, MD, and statistician Georg Gutjahr, Ph.D. ,and I have been asked to bring our Yoga vs. Osteoporosis program to them. Most of the medical and lab work is donated by their physicians, nurses and yoga teachers, but nutritional supplements and IRB approval will cost some. Time is too short for any of our usual granting organizations. Therefore we have set up a GoFundMe page which you're all invited to visit.

YOGA FOR OSTEOPOROSIS

CERTIFICATION COURSE

IN PERSON AND ONLINE

YOGA CENTER OF COLUMBIA

COLUMBIA, MD

AUGUST 2-4

Certification in this course enables you to teach the yoga that has been demonstrated to improve bone mineral density in people without regard to age, whether they have osteoporosis, osteopenia, or are in the normal range but just don't want to have those conditions. Liz and I teach the twelve poses in Beginner, Intermediate and Classic versions, then lead everyone in the group doing the poses, then ask volunteers to teach if they want to be certified. The teaching can be in person or online.

The studio's robo-camera follows the teacher around. Everyone will see corrections, suggestions, visual and non-visual cues and "tricks" Liz and I have learned over the years. The variety and richness of a hybrid course like this is striking.

In order to be certified you must have taught yoga for 5 years and you must pass the practicum and written test given at the end of the course. those with less years teaching who pass the tests will automatically be certified when they rea ch the 5-year mark.

Either yogis are more sophisticated or Liz and I have gotten better at teaching, because of late over 95% of the people taking the exams pass them.

LOW BACK PAIN

CERTIFICATION COURSE

IN PERSON

YOGAVILLE, VIRGINIA

SEPTEMBER 6 - 8

Yoga has been shown to treat low back pain as effectively as physical therapy, epidural injections, and even surgery, and low back pain is the most common medical reason for beginning yoga. Yet treating low back pain is not for beginners. Not at all. The symptoms of two conditions may be identical, yet their treatment be diametrically opposed: Herniated disc and spinal stenosis present my favorite example. The treatment that's good for one is precisely wrong for the other, although both may present with sciatica, numb feet, weakness in the legs, and back pain. But you don't usually need an MRI to tell the difference: An educated eye, an inquisitive interview and sound judgement will usually enable a careful clinician to determine what's causing the pain, and what to do about it.

In this course you'll learn the medical/anatomical/scientific background to recognize what's wrong, and the yoga expertise to administer the poses that will help sufferers with the 8 diagnoses that make up 90% of back pain. We will go through each of these, condition by condition, familiarizing you with how each comes about, what you see in people who have them, what to do to help them, and some work-arounds if people have the common problems that accompany each one.

People who have 5 years' teaching experience and pass the practicum and the written test that are given in the last part of the webinar will be certified to teach the method. Everyone gets the CEU. The 10 basic conditions are:

Herniated Disc .......................................Facet Syndrome

Spinal Stenosis ......................................Piriformis Syndrome

Quadratus Lumborum Spasm............... Spondylosisthesis

Sacroiliac Joint Derangement ................Arthritis
