CTPS IN NORTH AMERICA & EUROPE ARE PAVING THE WAY

Curt Flood in baseball, the Dave Clark Five in rock ‘n’ roll, Oprah Winfrey in entertainment, Steven Jobs in technology, and Sheila Smith in turnaround and restructuring work. What do all these figures have in common? They were trailblazers and luminaries in their field—and just darn awesome. What might not be so obvious is the why. No doubt you are familiar with some of these people, though perhaps not all. We will fill in that gap later.

The CTP's Foundation & The Early Days

Historians will generally argue how important it is to understand and keep history alive so that those who are succeeding today and accomplishing greatness realize and remember that they are standing on the shoulders of those who come before them. With that backdrop, the Certified Turnaround Professional (CTP) Program and the European Certified Turnaround Professional Program are no exceptions. It all started with smart people with a concept, along with the vision, dedication, and effort to turn it into reality.

The origins of the CTP date back to the early 1990s, if not slight earlier . The early founders of the Turnaround Management Association believed to add credibility to not only the organization but the entire profession that a certification was critical. And since one did not exist for the restructuring industry, it needed to be created in a way like what the CPA is to the accounting profession. TMA partnered with Northeastern University, where Harlan Platt, professor of accounting at the highly regarded university in Boston, helped shape the early stages of the program. This affiliation with a recognized university would continue to provide creditability to TMA as well its newly established certification program.
