A Primer On The Suburbs’ Newest Housing Option: Build-To-Rent

It’s easy for those of us steeped in the world of real estate to forget not everyone is familiar with terms like buydowns, acceleration covenants and proptech. So we weren’t surprised when Taylor Johnson client Lynd told us they were hearing of suburban Chicagons' lack of familiarity with build-to-rent (BTR) homes, which grew by 75% between 2022 and 2023 nationally, according to RentCafe, but to date are mostly in the Sun Belt. Sensing an opportunity to educate would-be local renters, we successfully pitched a byline by Lynd President of Development Anthony Tiritilli to The Daily Herald. The resulting piece was both informational – explaining the amenities and resident services available in BTR communities – and promotional, shining a spotlight on Lynd’s Home at Ashcroft, a 178-unit master-planned BTR community in Oswego, Ill., featuring attached three-bedroom homes with two-car garages, extended driveways and private yards.
