Please note if you have a student taking an Advanced Placement (AP) course. AP exam
orders will go out in November and we will simply order based upon class rosters. We will put invoices in myschoolbucks by the end of the year so you can begin making payments in January. We would like final payments by February 15th. If you have any questions in regards to these payments, please contact me.

Hear ye, hear ye! As the following month rapidly approaches, TJ Theatre students are working long, diligent hours to perfect this year's musical comedy,
Spamalot
, inspired by the 1975 film,
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
. This farcical take on the medieval tale of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round table incorporates modern elements and humor along their quest for the Holy Grail. The show will debut on November 8th, 9th, and 10th at 7:00 p.m.. Digital tickets can be purchased online via MySchoolBucks and are currently priced at $5 for students and $10 for non-students. Paper tickets will also be sold in the next few weeks. Due to the mature comedic themes prevalent in this show, children under the age of 10 will not be admitted. From its humorous audience participation to its incredible set-design, this musical truly incorporates all elements to maximize the overall experience as an audience member.

Here's what happened in the T.J. School Counseling World in the month of October:
- Organized the College Fair for Juniors/Seniors on October 2nd
- Completed ICAP classroom guidance lessons for 10th, 11th, and 12th grades
- Supported seniors with post-grad planning and sending transcripts and application materials
- Organized and implemented an in- school event for Colorado Free Application Day- October 30th
- o Students submitted over 140 in-state college applications during the school day!
- Ongoing individual student meetings to support academic and personal concerns
What we have planned for November:
- ICAP classroom guidance lessons for 10th graders
- Planning for Black Male Initiative through DPS (students can see their counselor if they are interested!)
- Ongoing support for seniors with post-grad planning and sending transcripts/ application materials
- Ongoing individual student meetings for credit checks, academic and personal concerns

Yearbook Announcements:
- Please check to see if we received your senior quote and photo. There's a poster hanging on the office windows, or you can check the yearbook website to make sure.
- Price: Get your book at the price of $55 until 1-18-19. The price will eventually increase to $65, so act fast!
- Baby Ad: If you would like to purchase a senior/baby ad, they are due by 11-16-18.

There is a new art club at TJ with Mr. Fox! Anyone is welcome to come, every week on Wednesdays during office hours we will meet in the art room. Every month there will be a theme that is completely optional for students to work on that they can show the rest of the club at the end of the month. Students can work on their own projects or projects related to the theme. There will also be a chance for students to post their art to a club-based social media account at the end of each month.

Want the 411 on fundraising at TJ? If you were wondering how it works, the PTO has three main sources for funding. While the bulk of the monies raised go toward classroom grants, PTO funds also go to support the TJ community in several ways such as teacher appreciation events and the Newcomer Cookout in August. The PTO also works with the student leadership team to support student sponsored events such as Homecoming and the Backyard BBQ. The PTO supports each class with PTO liaisons that coordinate raising money used for class specific activities such as Mr. TJ and Prom. In the last few years, the PTO has moved to simplify fundraising by focusing on these three efforts...
- ArtFest: This 30-year tradition for the wider community brings over 80 local artisans and small businesses together. Purchases of unique holiday gifts benefit teachers and students alike. ArtFest is a major fundraiser for the TJ community, providing funds for classroom grants. In the 2017-18 school year, the PTO awarded over $7,000 in classroom grants. This year's ArtFest will be held on December 8, 2018.
- Online Auction: Last year's online auction raised over $15,000! This is an easy way to include lots of people in supporting TJ while also coming away with some great buys. The PTO needs help with collecting donations and promoting this event. If you would like to help, contact Auction Chair, Megan Perkins at megandperkins@gmail.com. This year's auction will be held on March 10-14, 2019.
- King Soopers Cards: This is an incredible source of FREE money. Shop as you normally would using a reloadable gift card and a percentage of all your purchases go directly to TJ each month. A portion of these funds are granted to the senior class to help pay for senior year activities such as after prom festivities. Cards cost $5 and come preloaded with $5. We encourage all families to use King Soopers cards! Come to the next PTO meeting on Tuesday, November 13th to pick up your card or send an email request to tjhspto@gmail.com.
The PTO can't do any of this without the wonderful parents getting involved so thank you for your support! Together we are Spartan Strong!

Countdown to ArtFest 2018 - A Look Back
|
ArtFest is celebrating three decades of bringing together Southeast Denver's finest artists, artisans and makers. In its early days, it was mostly neighborhood crafters and was known as a craft fair. From the beginning, the event has had a special relationship with the wonderful Optimist Club of South Monaco. Wives of the Optimists started what was then called the "Thomas Jefferson Arts and Crafts Fair" 30 years ago when their children were at TJ. Some of those Optimist members still volunteer today! They continue to volunteer their expertise each year by seamlessly directing traffic and organizing the load in of all 80 vendors and their wares in the early morning hours on show day. Their help is generous and priceless!
The size of the event has varied over the years, but neighbors could always rely on it as a place to find one-of-a-kind gifts. In recent years, the event was rebranded as ArtFest and has grown to encompass much more-fine art, small-batch organic eats, decadent holiday treats, and entertainment. Buy Local and Support Small have been running themes for this event.
There is still space for great vendors to participate in the 30th Anniversary ArtFest. If you know any artists, artisans, or makers, please send them our way ASAP! We're looking for quality items from art and jewelry to household goods to bath and body to delicious holiday treats. Please share this page for the application and visit Facebook to join the community!
The PTO is also looking for TJ family owned businesses to sponsor this year's ArtFest. If you know someone who is interested in being a sponsor, please put them in touch with Spring Hericks at springhericks@gmail.com. We also need help with marketing and are looking for local businesses to display an 8.5" x 11" poster. If anyone has a connection or works for any of the businesses in the SE Denver area willing to display a poster to advertise the event, please have them contact Mel Toner at melvintoner@gmail.com. Great news: the huge SALE has been extended through November! l 2019 retro-Joe Spartan t-shirts are $5, all other short-sleeved t-shirts are $10, long-sleeved shirts are $20, and hoodies are $25. We also now have beanies with pom poms for $20 and beanies without for $15. We accept cash, credit cards and checks.

Mental Health and Social/Emotional Tips
|
Nearly one in six adults in the US experiences mental illness each year. That's a lot of people. You don't hear a lot of people talking about it... Let's help break the stigma associated with mental health by discussing some common disorders.
Anxiety disorders
...
People with anxiety disorders respond to certain things with fear as well as with physical signs of panic (think: a rapid heartbeat and sweating). Around 18% of Americans live with an anxiety disorder. This includes things like generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, and specific phobias.
Mood disorders
...
These disorders involve feeling everything from extreme happiness to extreme sadness. It can interfere with everyday life for an extended period of time. Some of the most common are depression and bipolar disorder. Almost 3% of Americans have bipolar disorder, while close to 7% suffer from severe depression.
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
...
When people are, yes, inattentive and hyperactive. Think: lack of focus, getting easily distracted, talking non-stop. While it's most common in kids, about 4% of US adults have ADHD.
Psychotic disorders
...
These cause people to remove themselves from reality. Two of the most common symptoms are hallucinations (images or sounds that are not real) and delusions (false ideas that the person believes are true, even when there's evidence against it). Schizophrenia is an example, and about 1% of adults in the US live with the disorder.
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
...
When people have constant thoughts or fears that make them do certain rituals or routines. Think: hoarding or hair-pulling.
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
...
It's a condition that develops after a traumatic and/or terrifying event. This includes things like sexual assault, the death of a loved one, or military combat. People with PTSD often have thoughts and memories of the event, and can be emotionally detached. There are also other trauma-and stressor-related disorders, such as acute stress disorder, where symptoms last from three days to one month after a traumatic event.
Impulse control disorders
...
The inability for someone to resist urges that could be harmful to themselves or others. Think: starting fires, stealing, compulsive gambling.
Personality disorders
...
when some thoughts and feelings change a person's identity, and can cause problems in how they relate to the world. Examples include antisocial personality disorder, paranoid personality disorder, and narcissistic personality disorder.
The good news is that most of these disorders
can be treated
. Treatment for everyone is different and specialists will make a plan specific to each person, based on the disorder, other mental health issues they may be dealing with, environment, finances, and even family history.
