Happy December TJ Families,
Only ten class days left in the semester. Let's make sure we are supporting students to do their best in the final stretch. Speaking of "final," Finals are December 17th-20th with makeups on the 21st by appointment. If your student does not have any makeup exams, their last day is Wednesday the 20th.
And don't miss out on TJ Artfest on December 8th from 9am-4pm. See below for details. There are multiple teachers exhibiting their artwork, so come support.

Our students did very well in their placement in the Citywide Orchestra and the Citywide Concert Band this year, which are groups for which students must audition, and are selected from among students across DPS. Additionally, we have a few students participating in the Citywide Marching Band, which will be marching in the Parade of Lights.
The following students were selected for one of the Citywide Orchestras. The placement in the three orchestras is based on audition quality, as opposed to age, which is a change from previous years. The chamber orchestra is a small, select group of 33 students, and 8 of those students are our own TJ students.
Intermediate Orchestra - Isabella Pitt (violin I), Isabella Sequera (violin I), Kaleb Mayeux (violin I), Isaac Mitchell (viola), Loren Sims (viola) & Ziyale Norris (cello), Audrey Cain (bass)
Chamber Orchestra - Maya Lee (violin I-3rd chair), Cladesia Kabing (violin I-4th chair), Aidan Schlue (violin I-5th chair), Sami Baker (violin I-6th chair), Sidney Teska (violin 2-5th chair), Sarah Mitchell (viola-1st chair), Filiz Baltaci (viola-3rd chair), Jessica Nesbit (cello-7th chair)
The following students were selected for the Citywide concert band:
Advanced Band - Aidan Schlue (bassoon), Kaleb Mayeux (alto sax), Jack Murphy (alto sax), Owen Monroe (tenor sax), Seraphina Shields (baritone sax), Diego Martinez (percussion), Nathan Hougard (percussion), Julia Moir (percussion)
BTW -Aidan and Kaleb were selected for both the Citywide Band and the Citywide Orchestra. Aidan Schlue has only been playing the bassoon for about 5 months, and Kaleb has only been playing the violin for about 3 months.

TJ Community,
As you well know, we had five students involved in a car accident on Friday, November 16th.
Two of the students were released from the hospital on that Friday, November 16th. Three students were admitted and thankfully two were released last week and are home recovering but have many more medical appointments and treatments ahead of them to ensure they're well.
One student still remains hospitalized and will require additional medical attention. Any help you can provide for the ongoing medical costs or for everyday items like groceries would tremendously help out our families would be appreciated. The families are appreciative and humbled by the support and love outpouring from the community and want everyone to know how grateful they feel during this difficult time.
I know many have asked what they can do.......
We are providing a link for donations if you wish to provide support these families with their ongoing medical and day to day expenses while they care for their students. PTO has set up a link for funds which will be managed by PTO and specific school personnel.

Here's what happened in the T.J. School Counseling World in the month of November:
- ICAP classroom guidance lessons for 9th graders
- Black Male Initiative - 25 students attended a DPS workshop to engage with male leaders and set future goals
- Support with sending transcripts and materials for seniors for college applications
- Ongoing individual student meetings to support academic and social-emotional concerns
What we have planned for December:
- ICAP classroom guidance lessons for 10th graders
- Schedule changes will be made for next semester on a case-by-case basis depending on availability of courses and each student's course plan/ credit standing during the week of December 10th-14th (students can see their counselors this week)
- Ongoing support for seniors with post-grad planning and sending transcripts/ application materials
- Ongoing individual student meetings for credit checks, academic and personal concerns

Give back to your community and make a difference working with youth!
If you love to have fun, and wish to gain experience with youth for your future career goals such as education, social work, recreation, psychology or human services, then this is the job for you. You will be engage with kids ages 5-11 years, play gym games and do fun art projects! Whether you are looking to gain experience or simply for a job that is different and fun and outside of the norm, then this is the job for you! Position details include: assisting the Site Director in all aspects of the after school program which include: building relationships with the kids and community, taking attendance, leading activities, actively supervising the kids and engaging with youth.
Our hours are flexible and you can work 2-5 days a week after school until 6pm with additional hours available on school breaks.

The TJ Spirit Store is stocked and ready to sell! Show your TJ pride in style and comfort with hoodies, t-shirts, hats, blankets and stadium chairs. The TJHS Spirit Store is open every Friday at lunch time.
Great news: the huge SALE has been extended through November! l 2019 retro-Joe Spartan t-shirts are $5, all other short-sleeved t-shirts are $10, long-sleeved shirts are $20, and hoodies are $25. We also now have beanies with pom poms for $20 and beanies without for $15. We accept cash, credit cards and checks.

Mental Health and Social/Emotional Tips

Soft skills
are desirable qualities for employment that do not depend on acquired knowledge. Softs are a combination of:
- interpersonal
people skills
- social skills and teamwork
- effective
communication skills
- organizational skills
- adaptability
- punctuality

These skills are in need!
- Of more than 500 Colorado recruiters and hiring managers surveyed this year (through LinkedIn), 41% of recruiters and 46% of hiring managers reported that it is "hard to find job candidates with the right soft skills."
- Across the United States, 59% of hiring managers said soft skills were difficult to find, and that the lack of soft skills is limiting their company's productivity.
Why Are Soft Skills Important?
- Companies are hiring on hard skills (acquired knowledge/academic skills) but firing on soft skills. "It's what makes or breaks someone being successful on the job."
- Company's recognize this is a pervasive problem and are looking for applicants and employees who can not only respond to the content, but who show common sense, the ability to deal with people, and a positive flexible attitude, among other traits.
- We need a healthy balance of hard and soft skills to be successful and effective in our careers, and as strong members of our community.
How do I increase my teen's soft skills?
1) Discuss "hard skills" versus "soft skills," as they may not know what these are- the more they know, the more they can be aware of how they interact with others, areas of strength they can highlight in interviews, and areas of which they can improve.
2) Model out loud problem solving (talk through your thought process when you come across a problem).
3) Highlight the importance of being on time. You can help them by teaching them time-management skills (try backwards planning, estimate how long things take, then have them actual time it!).
4) Help them learn to work with different people and work as part of a team- encourage them to be involved in groups that facilitate this, such as playing music in a group, sports, community service projects, and for them to step outside their comfort zone!
5) Instill resilience! We all know many aspects of life can be quite difficult; help them understand that no one is perfect, people make mistakes, but it is how we respond to and learn from our mistakes that make us strong and resilient. Positive attitude/outlook can help (ie: what can I learn from this experience?)
6) Encourage them to explain their thought process, ideas, feelings and concerns, and to be strong listeners as well. This will help their articulation skills and may help decrease frustrations that can arise when working as a team.
