"We gather as one humanity at God’s Table. We share a journey of discovery as a welcoming community of ever-deepening faith. We rejoice in serving one another and our neighbors through the love and grace of God in Christ. Wherever you are on your spiritual journey, you are part of the tapestry that makes us one."

From the Vestry:

Dear St. George’s Family,

Today I struggled to find something to write about. The problem was not that there was nothing to write about, but that there were so many things to write about that it was

difficult to pick just one! Our congregation is growing in exciting ways. As I look back over the last few months, some of the highlights I have seen are:

  • EYC Mission Week, a ministry of our youth to the city, had twice as many participants as last year! Shout out to Karrie LaCroix!
  • The Newcomers Ministry, led by Susan Westbrook. This team is reaching out to those new to St. George’s.
  • The Pastoral Care Ministry, led by Connie Douglass, is actively serving the needs of the congregation.
  • A Picture Directory of the congregation is now online, thanks to the brilliant work of Margaret Morley and her team of volunteers!
  • Holy Communion was led by a wonderful group of clergy from all over the Diocese.
  • Much-needed help in the office: Whitney Boyd has joined the church staff as Finance and Office Assistant!
  • No Sweat Soiree, under the leadership of Margaret Hatter, is underway to serve our ministry partners in the area.

Thank you to all who have led, volunteered, prayed for, and participated in these areas.

It is also a good time to pause and take stock of where we are in our Rector Search.

Some of the highlights of the last few months are:

  • Our Diocesan leaders have led the way. We have worked closely with Bishop Phoebe to form a vision of where we are headed in the Rector Search. More recently our new Canon to the Ordinary, Rev. Rob Courtney, has stepped into the role of guiding us through the transition process. Canon Rob led the Vestry in writing a Collect for use in our transitional period.
  • We have formed a Search Committee, led by John Planchon, Sr.
  • With your participation, we have taken a Congregational Survey.
  • We have found an amazing priest to lead St. George’s in the transitional period.
  • Our Interim Priest, Rev. Dorothy White, will begin her ministry at St. George’s on August 1. On August 4 she will join us in Sunday worship, and we will welcome her to St. George’s with a luncheon after the 10:30 service. Rev. Dorothy’s first Sunday as celebrant will be August 11. With you, I look forward to welcoming Rev. Dorothy White and seeing where she will lead us in worship and congregational life.
  • The Rector Transition process will be proceeding under the leadership of Canon Rob and Rev. Dorothy.

Truly there is momentum building at St. George’s!

Please join me in praying the collect written by the Vestry and Canon Rob Courtney:

Collect for Discernment at St. George’s

Creator God, who pours out your Spirit on all flesh and transforms hearts and minds, conform our hearts and minds to your will and strengthen our faith, that we may have the patience to know you are in control, so that we may come together as one in service of you and St. George’s, through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. AMEN.

Thursday Night Bible Study Resumes Sept 5 with New Class on The Psalms

An Introduction to the Psalms

“For I believe, that the whole of human existence, both the dispositions of the soul and the movements of the thoughts, have been measured out and encompassed in those very words of the Psalter.”

Athanasius, Bishop of Alexandria

John Calvin said the Book of Psalms is like a mirror, reflecting back to us every conceivable human thought and emotion.

Psalms have held a central place in Christian Church’s worship for two thousand years. Psalms are poetic prayers and form what have been called a “school of prayer.” They teach us how to bring ourselves before God. Scripture is God talking to us, Psalms are us talking to God. Psalms demonstrate that all of life is lived under God’s loving sovereignty---all of life---both its darkest and brightest moments.

As poetry Psalms require us to stretch our imaginations, to step outside of ourselves and listen carefully. As Hebrew poetry they are intensely compact and at the same time capable of having multiple meanings in a single line.

Please join St. George’s Episcopal Church’s Thursday Evening Bible Study online at 7:00 P.M. each week, starting September 5, 2024, for an amazing, in-depth study of the Book of Psalms that you have never experienced and will probably never again experience. Contact the class’s facilitator, Dr. Jimmy Elam at jimmyelam@hotmail.com, for further information and how to join via Zoom.

EDUCATION FOR MINISTRY REGISTERING FOR 2024-2025 PROGRAM: DISCOVER YOUR MINISTRY

The calendar page has flipped to August, so the start of school and the routine of autumn are coming soon! The Education for Ministry (EfM) program at St. George’s is also preparing for our 2024-2025 program year, and registration is open now.

EfM is a program of learning and spiritual growth, designed to help participants discover the ministries to which God might be calling them. Each year of the program focuses on a specific area: Year 1 is Old Testament, Year 2 is New Testament, Year 3 is Church History and Year 4 is Being a Christian in the World Today.

The St. George’s group meets in the library on Monday evenings from 6:45-8:45 PM from September through May, beginning the September 9, Monday after Labor Day. Participants gather to share in prayer, discussion of reading materials, spiritual reflections and worship. Due to the nature of the group (primarily discussion focused), participation is capped at 12 members.

So many members of St. George’s have experienced the EfM program and have found their purpose and identified their gifts for serving God. Interested? Need more information? Contact Verlinda Henning (901.490.1714, VerlindaH@aol.com) or speak with any participant/recent graduate: Caroline Brown, Rhea Clift, Janet Cooper, John Hannum, Perry Pennington, John Planchon, Angela Saunders, or Bobbie Wonderley McLaughlin.

We are Here for You

The past several years has affected all of us in unforeseen ways. Do you need help? St. George's is YOUR community.. If you need help--be it spiritual, mental, financial, physical, or emotional--the wisest action for you to take would be to reach out to a discreet resource that cares about you. There is no shame in saying, "I need help." It is a courageous act of self-care.

We have confidential prayer warriors wanting to add you to their list. Let us know of any burden or joy you'd like to share.
