New Bell, New Traditions Ring In

As we enter the season of giving, a new symbol has a prominent place on campus. A bell with special meaning now greets anyone who enters the Fred H. and Mozelle Bates Tarpley Education Center.

The bell was donated by Reinhardt Nurse Gwen Chambers and her sisters, Dr. Sharon Pappas and Gina Mitchell, in honor of Cora Belle Tarpley Holcombe, their mother, and Fred’s sister. It rang for the first time at a dedication ceremony on November 10th. “It makes me very proud of where I came from and the values instilled in all of us to pursue our goals and not give up,” explains Gwen. “I hope that message touches each student that rings that bell from here on out, that nothing is impossible. Don't look back, don't look down, look up and forward, and let that guide your steps. And always remember to have a heart of service. It's about whoever you're teaching and helping and giving.”

New traditions are already being established, thanks to this heartwarming gift. November 28, this semester’s graduates of the Cauble School of Nursing plan to ring the bell following their pinning ceremony. Gwen is honored, “It’s the ending of one chapter and the starting of another. Sending that sound out is an echoing reminder of the trickle effect of touching others in your career.”

Professor Raises Advocacy for

Pine Log Mountain

Dr. Donna Coffey Little (left) and Pinelog Preservation Society members Lisa Lipscomb, Joanna Drexler, and Scott Drexler at the reception for the Places in Peril designation.

The Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation released its 2024 list of ten Places in Peril in the state this week. Pine Log Mountain in Bartow County was placed on the list, thanks to the submission by Reinhardt University Professor, Dr. Donna Coffey Little. This placement is welcome news to the Reinhardt community who have a strong attachment to the mountain. Historical documents show Reinhardt students regularly visiting Pine Log Mountain for school outings and social gatherings, as far back as 1911.

Places in Peril raises awareness about Georgia’s significant historic, archaeological, and cultural resources that are threatened by demolition, neglect, inappropriate development, or insensitive public policy. The goal is to bring preservation solutions to the imperiled historic resources.

Pine Log Mountain is a privately owned 14,134-acre tract of wilderness that has been put on the public market for sale, and threatened by destruction, after years of being leased by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources as a wildlife management area.

Diverse Talents Growing Together with Scholarships

In keeping with Reinhardt’s vision of being a place where diverse talents grow together, the second annual Day for Diverse Talents and Scholars was held on November 10.

Twenty-two students, accepted for Fall 2024 enrollment, were invited to interview for potential scholarships. Each student submitted an example of graded academic work, two letters of recommendation, and a personal statement. Faculty and staff interviewed and graded each student.

There are different levels of scholarships they interviewed for. The highest scholarship Reinhardt awards through this program is the Presidential Scholarship. The incoming freshmen will find out about what they are awarded in about two weeks once the scholarship committee has reviewed the notes and scores.

Last year's scholarship recipients are all part of the new Scholar's Program with Dr. Amy Cottrill. The program brings together those students regularly to support each other and make the most of their opportunities at Reinhardt.

Happy 105th Birthday to Miss Reinhardt 1938

A remarkable Reinhardt alumna celebrated her 105th birthday on November 11th, and the Reinhardt community would like to extend its warmest wishes. Martha Jo (Boston) Carmichael Lingefelt has lived and worked in Cherokee County since her birth on Armistice Day in 1918. She lived with her two older brothers Klevin and Ford, and their parents Lonie and Paul, in a home on Bartow Street in Waleska, where Cline Park and the Paul Boston trail are now.

When Martha’s passion for music started growing as a young girl, her mother took in Reinhardt students’ laundry to make money for piano lessons. Martha would ride with the mailman to Atlanta to see her instructor.

Martha and her brothers attended Reinhardt for high school and college where they were all very active in clubs and sports. Martha, who studied music and became renowned for her piano ability, made the Reinhardt newspaper regularly in the 1930s. She accompanied the Glee club, played recitals, was on the operetta cast, and was a pianist at the chapel and for the Pierces and Alphas. She was a member of the International Relations Club, Vice President of Phi Alpha Literary Society, and played basketball. Before graduating in 1938, she was voted Miss Reinhardt which gave her great pride.
