Just Released! Mom to More Brings You Empowering Conversation with Stay at Home Mothers Navigating Careers and Motherhood.

Check Out This Inspiring Podcast Interview on Mom to MORE with Sharon Macey and me. Get the inside scoop of why I created Work Like a Mother®!

Sharon Macey has created an enlightening and inspiring movement engaging Stay-at-home mothers in conversation focusing on life after children leave the home, on her "Mom to MORE" podcast. Bravo Sharon! Work Like a Mother® is featured in this month's episode and I am grateful for the incredible opportunity to discuss how my own journey (Hilary Berger) as a mother of 4 children informed the creation of Work Like a Mother@-now 25 years strong and has served over 3500 women in rebuilding their confidence, professional purpose and vitality across parenting stages and beyond. Sharon leaves her audience with actionable strategies and tips for how to build mission, purpose, and joy throughout parenting years and after kids leave home. Research proves that being in "community" and sharing conversations with other mothers promotes well-being, courage, power, and the confidence needed to take small risks outside our comfort zone to rebuild your professional relevance and mission-driven purpose.

If you're seeking practical tools, and actionable tips get ready for a supportive and motivational exploration of life beyond motherhood as Sharon helps you unpack the question: What Do You Want To Do When Your Kids Grow Up?

Women's "Bill of Rights"

FINDING THE WORDS....TO BE ASSERTIVE

All human beings have certain basic rights. Yet most find it difficult if not impossible to own and claim these rights. By learning to speak our truth and being assertive, we recognize these rights and take responsibility for protecting them when they are disregarded by others. Some personal rights that are important, but often forgotten, include:

•The right to ask for what I want

•The right to say no to requests or demands I can’t meet

•The right to express all of my feelings, positive or negative

•The right to change my mind

•The right to make mistakes and not be perfect

•The right to follow my own values and beliefs

•The right to determine my own priorities

•The right to my own needs for personal space and time

Few of us were born with the needed communication skills to speak assertively to effectively communicate our feelings and needs, yet these skills are essential to our mental health and the freedom to live with our authentic voice and agency. Here is a wonderful reminder of your "assertiveness bill of rights" and you may be surprised when you read this. Assertiveness leads to healthier relationships that are honest, have boundaries, and where both your needs and the other person's needs are respected. All too often we resort to passive aggression and outright aggression when we don't communicate effectively. Most mental health struggles are impacted by a lack of this essential skillset and practice. I have this framed in my office and remind myself every day of these human rights which women all too often are not taught or properly resourced with, especially during parenting years. It is never too late to learn how to assert your needs despite the powerful sensations you feel or irrational thoughts or self-doubt that surface when it comes to having the courage to speak your truth in a way where both people's rights are honored. One critical Tip: ONLY Use "I" statements and own your experience, feelings, and unmet needs, rather than using the word "You" which creates defensiveness, shame, and anger in your listener. Let's start here. We are all in this together and this is easier said than done.

American Counseling Association. Counseling Today Magazine May 2024

Bridging the Gap- by Lisa Rhodes

"Bridging the Gap", written by Lisa Rhodes for the American Counseling Association, is a powerful resource filled with actionable tips and proven strategies for anyone struggling to return to the workplace after a career break. I'm grateful to be among those interviewed by The American Counseling Association, in the May 2024 edition of the Counseling Today Magazine along with esteemed career counseling professionals Marty Apodaca, LPCC, CCC, NCC, Emily Baxt, MA, LPCC, and Andrew Seguel to share insights informing this important piece highlighting strategies to navigate returning to the workplace when confidence and relevance seem out of our reach Here is a sneak peek: "Work Like a Mother®, a career counseling and career development framework that acknowledges and legitimizes motherhood as an integral part of a woman’s career journey, Berger says she has worked with stay-at-home mothers who no longer feel confident in their professional skills when returning to work. “A mother’s skills may be obsolete due to technological changes, but this does not mean that they are obsolete. Women’s professional resources lie right beneath the surface,” she says. It is my pleasure to share this article.

THE GUEST HOUSE POEM

I share with you this special poem. One that guides me through the ups and downs and yields self-love and compassion..

Mother's Day can be a complicated day emotionally for women. Honor yourself (with humor, grace, and nurturing) and appreciate all of the important women in your life who have touched your heart and nourished your soul, those with us, and those we remember. Remember that "Motherhood is more than bearing children. it is the essence of who we are as women" Let your day be filled with self-compassion, a joyful heart, humor, and gratitude for all you bring to the world. You all have touched my life profoundly and I am grateful to you and our incredible community of women.

Happy Mother's Day.

Love, HIlary

THE GUEST HOUSE

POEM BY RUMI

This being human is a guest house.

Every morning a new arrival.

A joy, a depression, a meanness,

some momentary awareness comes

as an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all!

Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows,

who violently sweep your house

empty of its furniture,

still, treat each guest honorably.

He may be clearing you out

for some new delight.

The dark thought, the shame, the malice,

meet them at the door laughing,

and invite them in.

Be grateful for whoever comes,

because each has been sent

as a guide from beyond.
