Scriptures to live positively:
Proverbs 14:30 “A relaxed attitude lengthens life; jealousy rots it away.”
Proverbs 4:20-22 “Pay attention, my child, to what I say. Listen carefully. Don’t lose (Keep) sight of my words. Let them penetrate deep within your heart, for they bring life and radiant health to anyone who discovers their meaning.”
Exodus 20:8-10 “Remember to observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days a week are set apart for your daily duties and regular work, but the seventh day is a day of rest dedicated to the Lord your God. On that day no one in your household may do any kind of work (everyone in your household must rest-yes, every person!). This includes you, your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, your livestock, and any foreigners living among you.”
Proverbs 3:5-8 “Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek His will in all you do, and He will direct your paths. Don’t be impressed with your own wisdom. Instead, fear the Lord and turn your back on evil. Then you will gain renewed health and vitality.”
Proverbs 17:22 “A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit saps a person’s strength.”
We talk all the time with our scholars about positive phrasing. Say what you mean and mean what you say. Tell them what you want them to do instead of what you DON’T want them to do.
The red notations above are positively phrased. Somehow I “don’t” feel right about changing scripture so I stopped. You can get a feel for how it changes the impact. We want our expectations to be very clear with children. Clean your room. Speak kindly to you parents. Treat others with respect.
I was having a conversation with one of the teachers. We were discussing how when something happens to us, so often we take it personally when most of the time it is just a difference of opinion. I told her about The Four Agreements written by Don Miguel Ruiz and Janet Mills. (worth reading)
One of the agreements that goes beautifully with Positive Phrasing is “Be impeccable with your word.” I think this is what the Lord meant when He said, “Speak the truth in love.” I’m working on this in my own life. Join me?
