The Maryland Innovation Initiative (MII) has awarded $22 million to more than 200 commercialization projects to include 46 start-up companies since its inception in late 2012. Awards were given across a variety of industries, including therapeutic, software, medical devices and engineering. 

"MII is the leading program in Maryland that supports the transition of technology from the academic research laboratory through product development to commercialization in a start-up company," says John Wasilisin, President and COO. "The program has been a game changer for innovators at Maryland's research universities to take the next step in becoming entrepreneurs."

Maryland Stem Cell Research Fund
The Maryland Stem Cell Research Fund (MSCRF) aims  to accelerate cures through innovative basic, translational, and clinical applications of human stem cell research. The MSCRF program has, to date, supported over 375 research projects totaling over $130 million 
Dr. Chulan Kwon
across various universities and companies in Maryland and spanning a wide range of disease areas.

The program brings together scientists in academic and industrial settings to innovate and push the boundaries of human stem cell-based disease modeling and cellular therapies and Dr. Chulan Kwon's work is one such example of these initiatives. 
Dr. Kwon, Associate Professor of Medicine at Johns Hopkins University, and colleagues from JHU demonstrate that immature human cardiac cells made in a dish, can be turned into mature adult heart muscle cells in a month, when placed into rat hearts.

Dr. Amritha Jaishankar joined TEDCO as the award manager for the Maryland Stem Cell Research Fund (MSCRF)  and Dr. John Gustin has been named award manager for TEDCO's Maryland Innovation Initiative (MII).

Maryland Entrepreneur's Resource List (MERL)  Office Hours, February 24, 2017
MERL provides a list of entrepreneurs who are available to mentor or provide leadership to early stage companies. MERL can be used by innovators who need an entrepreneur to commercialize their technology or by university and federal laboratory technology transfer professionals who want to identify management for a start-up opportunity being developed at their institution. The next MERL Office Hours is February 24, 2017 from 9-11 a.m. at TEDCO in Columbia; RSVP to Dr. Linda Saffer at lsaffer@tedco.md .
