Spring in Tuscany-Canterbury

Many of us moved to this neighborhood because it is beautiful. This is true especially in the Spring. The picture gallery has been improved - when you click on the picture it will now enlarge. If you would like to share your pictures, please send them to us.

Time to Volunteer

Tuscany-Canterbury

Tuscany-Canterbury continues to be a great neighborhood because of the support of the residents. Get involved.

TCNA Board: At the June 2023 meeting, the Nominating Committee will recommend a slate of officers and board members. This recommended slate will be sent to the membership 30 days prior to the June meeting according to the TCNA by-laws. Lu Parsley, past president, is chair of the committee. The goal is to have an active and committed board with members from all sections of the neighborhood, including the condominiums.

All board members serve one year terms and

  • Are responsible for a committee or other neighborhood project; and are willing to provide information for the newsletter and website concerning the committee's activities or projects
  • Attend the majority of six board meetings and two general meetings each year
  • Must be current TCNA members
  • Reach out to neighbors in their section of the neighborhood when necessary
  • Keep the board informed about neighbors' issues and concerns

Volunteers are also needed

Residential Parking Permit Coordinator: Coordinates with Baltimore City and distributes paid permits at the TCNA general meeting in June. This allows neighbors to pick them up here instead of paying additional costs for having the permits mailed or going to the Parking Authority.

Greens Committee: Volunteers work to keep the neighborhood green and beautiful. They are responsible for the four public gardens and for

adding trees throughout the neighborhood.

Streets Committee: There are major street projects (University Parkway, 39th Street, Linkwood Road, Tuscany Road) to calm the traffic and make the neighborhood safer for all.

Membership Committee: The goal of the committee is to welcome new neighbors, make sure everyone knows about TCNA, and encourage neighbors to join TCNA.

Events Committee: Events throughout the year provide a variety of opportunities for neighbors to get to know each other.

Communications Committee: This committee produces an e-newsletter 10 times a year, sends out updates as needed, and manages and improves the TCNA website.

Tuscany-Canterbury Public Safety Updates

Paul Gallo, Chair of TCNA Public Safety Committee

Tuscany-Canterbury continues to be one of the safest neighborhoods in Baltimore. Tuscany-Canterbury is home to 3800 people in 1700 homes, condos, and apartments.

Catalytic Converters Stolen

During the early morning hours of March 7, 2023, at approximately 4:00am a couple of individuals that drove onto the Warrington Condo parking lot jumped out of their car, and proceeded to remove the catalytic converters from three Toyota Prius vehicles parked on the lot.

The catalytic converter is usually on the underside of the car or truck as part of the exhaust system, situated between the engine and the muffler. It looks something like another muffler.

TCNA will have suggestions from Baltimore City Police about ways to prevent this type of theft next month.

Electric Vehicle Charging Stations Are Coming.

Are We Ready?

The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) passed by Congress and signed by President Biden in 2021 contains significant, game-changing funding to subsidize the purchase of new electric vehicles (EVs) and installation of charging stations to reduce "range anxiety" for all those new EV owners.

Both the City of Baltimore and property owners in our area are looking into the best places to locate new EV charging stations, how to ensure equitable access to them, and the best ways to make them resilient to environmental and human-caused damage so they're available when needed.

Tuscany-Canterbury needs to be ready to provide input to the City of Baltimore and the State of Maryland when city ordinances, state laws, and changes to regulations are proposed in the coming months.

We'd like your input on questions like these and we'd like to know what questions you have:

  • Should charging stations be made available on city streets for those without driveways?

  • Is there another way to provide access to EV charging for our neighbors without off-street parking?

  • Should advertising or other revenue generating uses be allowed on charging stations in residential areas to pay for ongoing maintenance and repairs?

  • What's the best way to ensure charging stations are maintained in good condition?

  • How can the city protect against abandonment of charging stations if a private operator goes broke?

  • What are potential opportunities for our neighborhood associated with installation of new EV charging stations?

  • What are risks and downsides that we should mitigate or avoid?

Calvert Lower School Construction

The first part of the lower school building project is to move some of the underground utility lines in the back of the lower school building. The move will likely take the majority of March.

Rough outline of project with some projected timeframes

  • Grading and foundation work – End of March – Mid May
  • Setting the structural steel – Mid May
  • Pouring the second floor slab – Late May
  • Framing the exterior – Late May/Early June
  • Exterior work – June and July

TCNA will direct all resident questions to Tom Travers at Calvert School through the liaison chair. The following information was provided to TCNA residents after inquiries were made regarding the project. Construction noise cannot be avoided but Calvert School will be following the city ordinances that no work can be conducted between the hours of 7pm-7am. No street closures are expected and all building materials will be stored on Calvert property.

For details of the project see the TCNA September 2022 newsletter.

TCNA Website Feature: "The Golden Triangle"

Building a Neighborhood: The Golden Triangle 1914-1945

Tuscany-Canterbury as it is known today was built mostly between the two world wars. Its enviable near-downtown location and suburban character attracted families, retired people, and Hopkins students and faculty. Education facilities met every need, from kindergarten through post-graduate years. There was attractive living space for virtually everyone. Little wonder realtors soon dubbed it the “Golden Triangle.”

The history section is organized by areas. Listed below are the developments on Charles Street between 39th Street and south to University Parkway.

Message from Baltimore City Recycling

Baltimore City will not recycle anything put out for regular recycling if it’s in a plastic bag!

This is the number one reason recycling is rejected.

John Shields

Culinary Champion of the Chesapeake

TCNA neighbor, John Shields was highlighted in an article in BMoreArt about a restauranteur (Gertrudes) chef, author, and television host became a leader for environmental causes pertaining to foodways, health, and economic justice." John reminds us of the importance of protecting our most precious resource, the Chesapeake Bay, and how our “Chesapeake cuisine is a sense of place, of being rooted here.

Click here to read the article

Congressman Mfume was elected to represent all of Tuscany-Canterbury to the US Congressman in November 2022.

TCNA gets information from him to share with the neighborhood. Since so many of the TCNA neighbors are active in non-profit groups, he suggests you can get ready for the 2024 possible funding. It’s time to secure more Community Project Funding wins for our neighborhoods through the fiscal year 2024 appropriations process. If you are or know of a non-profit organization or government entity that would benefit from direct federal dollars,

please visit my website for Community Project Funding. "

TCNA frequently gets questions about what type of doors, paint, roof, etc, is required in Tuscany Canterbury. This question came in this month.

"We are considering a kitchen remodel and the contractor asked if TCNA has the same architectural review for doors and windows that Roland Park and Homeland have."

The answer is TNCA has no special requirements other than the permits that Baltimore City requires.

TCNA has added a page - FAQ on the TCNA website and this is one of the questions with answers. There is a page with architectural guidelines, but these are suggestions but not required.

Restaurants

In and Around Tuscany-Canterbury

As Tuscany-Canterbury celebrates the season of St. Patricks and signs of green, what better time to take an Irish Stroll through our neighborhood?

Start with the newly named Bradley’s Bar and Grill (formerly Alizee) in the Colonnade. While no beers are on tap, local favorites (Natty Boh, Raven Beer, Loose Cannon) are available in bottles. If a more staid beer is your favorite (no judgement) Heineken and Sam Adams are also available.

Next, wander to Cypriana, where the full menu is available at the bar. Key Brewing and Brewers Art represent Baltimore, while Stella and Kronenbourg take you around the world. Sit back, relax, and meet a new neighbor as you toast the coming Spring.
