LMHS has success at Region Band contest
By Daniel Quintana, LMHS Director of Bands

After producing some record breaking results last weekend with La Marque Middle School, this weekend showed more success at the high school level.

Kaila Sajna, 9th grade flute player at The La Marque High School placed in the top 20 at this weekends High School Region 13 Audition.  Kaila went up against over 60 flute players from all around the region and earned a chair in the Region Concert Band.
Out of all the 9th graders at the contest, Kaila was the 4th best flute player in her grade level.

Kaila has set the bar extremely high at The La Marque High School and the entire band staff is extremely proud of her.  The excellence at La Marque is second to none, and our on-going mo tto this year continues to be #beachampion. Our band students sure are Champions!

TCHS Band has 5 advance to Area for All State process
By Matthew Raines, TCHS Director of Bands

For 80 years the Texas City High School Sting Band program has been steeped in a tradition that enjoys a rich musical heritage. As each year passes we hope to continue this tradition and prove to our community, school, administrators, parents, and our band program that we are still committed to our Legacy of Success.

The TMEA (Texas Music Educators Association) Region Band process is rigorous. This process began in August when our students received the chosen region etudes for the audition. We immediately began master classes and other small group instruction to work as a group to learn this music. During this time the students were also focused on the UIL Marching Band show as priority 1 and some elected to go the extra mile and audition on the All State Region Jazz Music as well.

The Region band audition process is over 3 days; Friday and Saturday for Phase 1, and Monday for Phase 2. The students are given letters and divided into rooms. Each room has 5 judges that are hidden behind a partition for anonymity. The students are called up in groups of 5 to play the excerpt, or cut of the music, that is chosen by the judges. Each student is scored on the 3 pieces of music prepared with 100 points each possible score. The score sheets are tallied at the end of the process and entered. Most nights the students did not return to the school until 11 p.m. or after. We compete against 5A schools including: Manvel, Shadow Creek, Santa Fe, Ball High, Angleton and 6A schools including: Clear Creek, Clear Lake, Clear Brook, Clear Falls, Clear Springs, Dickinson, Friendswood, Alvin, and Brazoswood. There were a total of 983 participating throughout phase 1.

This year 26 students attended the TMEA Region 17 Band auditions from TCHS and I would like to commend them for their efforts to finish their commitments.

TCHS and Blocker robotics headed to State
by James Jobe, TCHS Engineering & Robotics Teacher

Texas City High School Robotics were once again dominant at the Pasadena ISD VEX tournament at Lewis Career and Technical High School.  All five Texas City robots advanced to at least the quarter final round, being knocked out only by their teammates throughout eliminations.  590G, with their alliance partners 77590X from Blocker Middle School and 20002B from Silsbee High School, defeated the 590B lead alliance in the final to take the Tournament Championship. 590G was also awarded the Excellence Award, the highest honor at a VEX event. 590B didn't go home empty handed, bringing back the Robot Skills Championship and the Design Award.

This is the first event for the students from Blocker Middle School. Their impressive showing not only won them the Tournament Championship, but also saw them finish tied for 3rd in Robot Skills at a mostly high school event. They are currently ranked as the #1 middle school in Robot Skills in the state of Texas. Blocker is  currently the #56 ranked middle school in the US, #502 in the world overall (including high school) out of 2,772 ranked teams. There are over 18,000 VEX teams worldwide. Blocker is the only middle school to win a championship at a high school tournament in Texas this season. They will join all the 590 teams at the South Texas State Championships in February at Clear Brook High School. The Blocker team is mentored by seniors Dillon Harvey, Zach Smith, and junior Keilan Levesque.

Christmas with the Blue visits Calvin Vincent

Thanks to the Texas City Police Department for their annual support of pre-kindergarten students at Calvin Vincent and thanks to the Galveston County Food Bank for supporting the families. This year, besides each child receiving gifts from the TCPD's "Christmas with the Blue", each Calvin Vincent Family is receiving food from our local food bank.

Each child received a bag of gifts from Santa in their classroom this week. Students were very excited for the special treat and to see Santa at their school.

LMMS receives more than 600 pounds of supplies from PA

Midd-West Middle School from Pennsylvania adopted La Marque Middle School, which was hit hard after flooding from Hurricane Harvey rains. The school collected more than 600 pounds of supplies. Watsontown Trucking Company donated their services to drive the supplies down so that the students didn't have to raise funds to ship them.

The supplies arrived last Friday, with snow on the ground. It seems like the winter northern weather came from Pennsylvania also!

Students were excited to see the truck pull up with the new supplies. Thanks so much to Midd-West Middle School and Watsontown Trucking for being so kind to our students. LMMS math teacher Yesenia Contreras was the contact person for this outreach.

Thanks, to our friends in PA!
