Federal investment to enable old fire hall to be converted into green community space


Infrastructure Canada announced federal funding of up to $7.7 million to revitalize the Old Bolton Fire Hall.


The fire hall will be converted to the Humber River Centre, a state-of-the-art multi-use community space that will be more sustainable and accessible. The facility will offer spaces for use by community groups and citizens, including an innovation hub/maker space, a commercial kitchen, meeting rooms and a large multi-use space available for events, programming and farmers’ markets.

Brampton issues EOI for public land development


Brampton is looking for feedback on the future of city-owed land at Kennedy Road, Highways 410 & 407.


The area is identified in the city’s 2040 vision as the east anchor of ‘Uptown Brampton’, a 112-acre site that council says “has transformative potential to advance the area as a regional destination.”


An expression of interest (EOI) has been released, looking for comprehensive plans to develop the lands into a vibrant urban realm and walkable neighbourhood that includes a state-of-the-art, multi-purpose cricket facility.

The accompanying table records the 10 largest construction project starts in Canada in December 2022. Also included is the latest trend graph on starts. This looks at 12-month moving totals of the civil and non-residential building categories in Canada.


There are several reasons for highlighting upcoming large projects. Such jobs have often received a fair amount of media coverage. Therefore, people in the industry are on the lookout for when job-site work actually gets underway. And, as showcase projects, they highlight geographically where major construction projects are proceeding.

Cooper buys Hub


Canadian-owned and operated construction equipment rental company Cooper Equipment Rentals Limited has bought Toronto-based Hub Equipment via the purchase of 100 per cent of the company’s shares.


Established in 1946 in Moncton, New Brunswick, Hub Equipment moved its operations into Southern Ontario in the 1950s. Today, it is a leading provider of specialized heavy equipment, offering brands such as CAT, Volvo, Hitachi, John Deere, Komatsu, and more.


Hub Equipment will operate as a Specialty Division of Cooper under the leadership of Tom Stevenson, president, and Raegan Fatouros, general manager.

Fanshawe announces $2 million donation from Crich family


Fanshawe College is pleased to announce a donation of $2 million from London’s Crich family. This is the largest individual donation in the College’s history, and will create the new Don Crich Skilled Trades Accelerator, housed at Fanshawe’s London Campus.


The Don Crich Skilled Trades Accelerator will be an entrance point for all members of the community to learn more about trades and share employment opportunities. The space is named for Don Crich, founder of Auburn Developments, TerraCorp Management, Auburn Homes and Stonerise Construction, who passed away in 2015. Mr. Crich was passionate about construction and was a mentor to many people who wanted to work in the trades.

Skills Ontario asks for more trades programming investment in 2023 budget


Ahead of the 2023 provincial budget, Skills Ontario Chief Executive Officer Ian Howcroft recently participated in the minister of finance’s budget consultations at Sheridan College to talk about the financial impact of skilled trade shortages.


Skills Ontario recommended continued investments from the province in its skilled trade and technology programming as the demand for workers in the skilled trades continues to grow.


The shortage is costing the province approximately $25 billion in foregone GDP, indicates a release, adding the Conference Board of Canada study highlighted a need of over 500,000 new entrants to the skilled trades by 2030 to address shortages.

Developers unveil latest plan for Toronto Quayside


Toronto developers Dream and Great Gulf Group, working in a joint venture called Quayside Impact, have released early designs for their 12-acre Quayside project to Waterfront Toronto’s Design Review Panel.


The project on Toronto’s waterfront at Queens Quay East will feature five residential towers and one mass timber structure, with a mix of market-rate and affordable units and including commercial, institutional and retail space.


Quayside Impact introduced its master plan concept and early-stage designs to Waterfront Toronto’s Design Review Panel late last month.

Bird Agrees to Acquire Ontario Telecommunications and Utility Contractor


Bird Construction recently announced that it has agreed to acquire Trinity Communication Services, a diversified telecommunication and utility infrastructure contractor. Based in Ontario, Trinity provides services to major national and regional telecommunication, utilities, power, and internet service providers. The total consideration for the transaction is being funded 90% through cash on hand, with the balance coming from Bird common shares. The transaction is expected to be accretive to earnings per share in 2023. All transaction agreements have been completed, and the transaction will be effective at 12:01 a.m. on February 1, 2023.

New Funding Opportunity – Deep Retrofit Accelerator Initiative from Natural Resources Canada / Nouvelle possibilité de financement – Initiative d’accélérateur de rénovations majeures de Ressources naturelles Canada

Natural Resources Canada has launched a new initiative to accelerate deep retrofits in buildings. The $185.5-million Deep Retrofit Accelerator Initiative (DRAI) will offer non-repayable contributions to projects that build capacity for and facilitate the development of deep retrofits in commercial, institutional, or mid- or high-rise multi-unit residential buildings in Canada.


Selected projects will establish and/or aggregate deep retrofit projects, guide individual building owners in the process of developing and implementing specific retrofit projects, identify available funding and financing for specific deep retrofit projects, and conduct capacity building activities, such as developing or implementing novel, standardized, or replicable approaches to deep retrofits.


Eligible applicants include Canadian organizations (for- and non-profit), all levels of government, and Indigenous organizations and groups.

  • Applications must be received by April 28, 2023.
  • Indigenous applicants or applicants who focus on Indigenous communities may submit applications at any time until March 31, 2025, or until funding is fully distributed.

Negotiated Request for Proposal for General Contractor Services for the new Etobicoke Civic Center


The City of Toronto (the "City") requires a qualified General Contractor (the "Vendor") to provide construction services for the new Etobicoke Civic Centre ("ECC") Project. The Successful Vendor shall provide complete construction services and will be solely responsible for all activities throughout the construction phase until the completion of the project including the warranty period.
