McCallion remembered as an ‘immense ally’ of constructors
Former Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion is being remembered by construction stakeholders as a staunch ally of the sector, an excellent listener and plainspoken negotiator who balanced the needs of citizens with the requirements of builders.
McCallion, who served as mayor from 1978 to 2014, died peacefully in her sleep Jan. 29 at the age of 101.

Standardized working at heights training improves safety, study
A follow-up study looking at the impact of Ontario’s mandated working at heights training confirms standardized training results in safer work.
Working at heights (WAH) training standard took effect in 2015 requiring employers ensure workers on construction projects complete standardized and approved WAH training before they work at heights and use fall protection equipment and systems.

RESCON calling for bigger steps to boost housing supply
The Residential Construction Council of Ontario (RESCON) is asking the provincial government to modernize the development approvals process, boost pathways into the skilled trades and rein in municipalities that have independently put in place their own technical construction standards.
Requests are included in a provincial budget submission to Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy, stating further action is needed “as Ontario is in desperate need of housing supply and lagging in terms of innovation and the length of time it takes to get projects approved.”

Bird awarded contract for $200M Ontario processing facility
Bird Construction recently announced it has been awarded a progressive design-build contract for a processing facility in Ontario.
Bird did not announce the location of the processing facility or any other details. Project delivery is divided into phases, with the owner, consultants and contractors working collaboratively to ensure the cost estimate, schedule forecast and project planning are sufficiently advanced before construction, stated a Feb. 1 release. The total project value is over $200 million.

Stantec appoints senior principal to lead its Canadian federal program
Daniel Leclair has joined Stantec, a global sustainable design and engineering firm, as the senior principal to lead the company’s Canadian federal program from its Ottawa office, overseeing major federal programs and projects across the country. Leclair’s appointment demonstrates the firm’s commitment to building a stronger federal leadership team in Canada. He joins the firm’s Canada federal program building on the success of the company’s U.S. federal program and unites the firm’s business lines to provide innovative solutions for the government’s major programs.

Canadian building permits decrease 7.3% in December
Statistics Canada reports that the monthly total seasonally adjusted value of building permits in Canada decreased 7.3% in December to $10.3 billion. Declines were posted in both the residential and the non-residential sectors.
On a constant dollar basis (2012=100), the total value of building permits fell 7.4% to $6.1 billion. Residential sector down in December following a strong November The total value of residential permits declined 8.4% to $6.5 billion in December.

An inside look at Humber’s centre for skilled trades
The expansion and renovation of Humber College’s Centre for Skilled Trades and Technology is beginning to take shape and, once complete, the new facility is expected to help address the increasing demand for apprenticeship and trades training. The project involves construction of a two-storey addition of approximately 16,620 square feet and renovation of about 11,500 square feet within the existing Centre for Trades and Technology, located at 110 Carrier Dr. in Toronto, Ont., near Humber College’s north campus. Compass is providing construction management services for the $9.5 million project and other project partners include Barry Bryan Associates and Morrison Hershfield.

RESCON committed to ensuring the industry remains inclusive
The Residential Construction Council of Ontario (RESCON) says it will continue to embrace diversity, equity and inclusion as key priorities in the building industry as it celebrates Black History Month.
Over the past few years, RESCON has undertaken a number of initiatives including forming an Anti-Racism Roundtable in 2020 to combat anti-Black racism in the construction industry by raising awareness, creating and sharing resources and engaging with the next generation of construction workers. Throughout the month of February, RESCON will be sharing some outcomes achieved since launching the roundtable on Twitter.
