Federal prompt payment act ‘in limbo’ says Canadian Construction Association

According to the Canadian Construction Association (CCA), it has been almost two years since the Federal Prompt Payment for Construction Work Act passed but the legislation still remains in limbo with no legal coming-into-force date.

Noose found on Eglinton Crosstown job site, continuing string of Toronto incidents

Another noose has been found on a Toronto construction site, this time at the site of the Eglinton Crosstown light rail project’s Leaside Station. It is the second found on one of the LRT project sites. Another was discovered last July on the city’s west end, leading to the swift resignation of member of Carpenters Local 27.

Ontario Setting Up Apprentices and Employers for Success

The Ontario government is investing $47 million in 2021-22 to hire more apprentices, improve the quality of training and help them complete their training and certification through the new Achievement Incentive Program and the expanded Apprenticeship Capital Grant.

Ontario's $23 million Achievement Incentive Program will provide over 11,000 employers in the construction, industrial, service and other sectors with up to $4,000 in funding per apprentice as they reach key training milestones.

EllisDon Forms New Western Canada Civil Group

EllisDon's Western Civil Group has separated out from under the Buildings Group umbrella to operate as a separate entity and region serving Alberta and British Columbia.

The group will be led by Colin Hill, Vice President of Western Civil, EllisDon. Hill is a 20-year veteran in Civil construction and will work with a hand-selected team of industry experts. Over the past five years, Hill has been actively developing the Western Civil team under the Calgary Buildings Group with the intention of becoming an independent entity at the right time.

New TCA chair cites survival of members as short and long-term goal
The new chair of the Toronto Construction Association (TCA) says helping member businesses survive is and will always be a top priority.

“Our main focus is how do we help our members survive the next 12 months, or whatever it takes, and try to minimize the number of contractors or members who are being adversely impacted by COVID,” said Jeff Murva. “We want all our members to survive this and come out strong enough to resume their business and that is a huge challenge.”
