Construction employment flat in April
Canada’s construction employment was essentially flat in April, reports Statistics Canada in its most recent Survey of Employment, Payrolls and Hours. The sector saw a seasonally adjusted rise of 400 workers from the March figures, although the year-over-year figures were more promising, with the sector reporting a little over 12,000 more jobs than April of 2023.
Job vacancies in the sector came in at a seasonally adjusted 47,200, with the job vacancy rate, or the number of vacant positions as a proportion of total labour demand, coming in at 3.9 per cent.

Ontario exploring use of digital twins to help deliver key infrastructure projects
The Government of Ontario is testing the application and benefits of digital modelling technology, known as digital twins, to help deliver key infrastructure projects such as hospitals, highways and transit on time and on budget.
Digital twins are virtual models of existing and planned assets that when mapped for construction projects, can be used to help identify and resolve problems before work begins. Using a digital twin for underground utilities, for example, can help reduce the risk of delays and cost overruns on projects.

David Lindsay reappointed as chair of Infrastructure Ontario
Ontario’s Minister of Infrastructure Kinga Surma recently announced that David Lindsey has been reappointed as chair of Infrastructure Ontario’s board of directors for an additional three years.
According to a statement, since his appointment in 2021, he has fulfilled an important advisory role for the government and ensured the agency’s corporate governance continues to meet the highest standards of integrity and professionalism.

CAGBC awards green buildings, leaders and projects
The Canada Green Building Council (CAGBC) announced the 2024 winners of the CAGBC Awards at the Building Lasting Change conference gala.
The annual awards celebrate the innovative projects, teams, and individuals making positive contributions to Canada’s green building sector.
Awards were presented in two categories: Green Building and Green Building Leadership. The annual Lifetime Achievement honour went to Josée Lupien, president and founder of Vertima.

PCL Joins Toronto Zoo to Kick Off Construction of the New Conservation Centre

Mikey Network president: Defibrillators should be at all construction sites
The Mikey Network’s mission is to place defibrillators in high-risk public places so that those affected by sudden cardiac arrest can have a second chance at life and the construction site should be no exception.
“We want to have another chapter. We want Mikey’s to be at construction sites,” Eva Naumovski, president of the Mikey Network, told the audience of a recent webinar on Automated External Defibrillators hosted by the Residential Construction Council of Ontario. “We believe that there is something we can do. We’ve done this before. We’ve seen other areas that require these lifesaving units and together we hope we can build on this requirement that our industry and our workers need.”

Infrastructure Ontario update highlights 25 projects in procurement worth $30B
Infrastructure Ontario released it June 2024 Market Update, which includes 25 projects in pre-procurement and active procurement, totalling more than $30 billion in estimated design and construction costs.
The update also includes 17 government-announced projects in the initial stages of planning, for which the scope, timing and delivery model are still being determined.
One new project added to IO’s pipeline is the Volkswagen Battery Cell Plant – OPP Detachment, which will support the significant boost in economic and social activity being created in the area around St. Thomas’ incoming VW electric vehicle battery manufacturing plant.

Miller Paving first in Canada with EPDs
Miller Paving Ltd. recently became the first Canadian asphalt concrete pavement producer to offer Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for its asphalt mixtures. A Colas company, Miller worked with its parent company for support during the 18-month process. This included partnering with WAP Sustainability and by association, the National Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA) to make the NAPA Emerald Eco-Label tool for the development of asphalt mixture EPD available in Canada.

Tunnelling complete on segment of Eglinton Crosstown West Extension
The Government of Ontario and Metrolinx announced tunnelling of the western underground portion of the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension is finished, marking a significant milestone in the rapid transit line that will connect communities from the east end of Toronto to Etobicoke and Mississauga.
The two 6.3-kilometre tunnels along Eglinton Avenue West bring the Extension from Renforth Drive to Scarlett Road, where the future line will come to the surface and transition to an elevated guideway.
