Toronto City Council report details $26B infrastructure funding gap


The City of Toronto’s 2024 Corporate Asset Management Plan (AMP), detailing a $26 billion infrastructure funding gap, was unanimously adopted by Toronto City Council, highlighting the ongoing need for prioritization and partnerships. The report identifies the value of the City’s non-core infrastructure assets at $73 billion and forecasts that an average annual investment of $4 billion is needed to maintain these assets in good condition to provide their current levels of service to Torontonians.

Oak View Group breaks ground on Hamilton’s FirstOntario Centre reno

 

Apotentially transformative project in Hamilton, Ont. reached a milestone May 16 as developers and city officials held a groundbreaking ceremony at the site of the Hamilton arena project. Oak View Group (OVG), the largest developer of sports and live entertainment venues in the world, is spearheading a $280-million renovation of FirstOntario Centre along with Live Nation Canada and the Hamilton Urban Precinct Entertainment Group (HUPEG).

March Building Construction Investment Sees Significant Growth


Statistics Canada reports that investment in building construction surged 4.5% to $20.4 billion in March. This growth was driven by a 5.4% increase in the residential sector, reaching $14.3 billion, and a 2.3% rise in the non-residential sector, totaling $6.1 billion.


In constant dollar terms (2017=100), building construction investment rose 4.1% to $12.5 billion. Residential building investment saw a 5.4% increase, with notable gains in Ontario (+6.5%; +$344.2 million) and Quebec (+9.2%; +$232.1 million).

Mass timber design showcased in big and small-scale education projects


Mass timber is making strides in the educational space with two new projects in Vancouver and Toronto.


Acton Ostry Architects associate principal Milos Begovic presented the Here to Stay: Educational Projects in Mass Timber session during the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada’s annual conference held in Vancouver. Begovic highlighted innovative wood-based construction at both the Little Flower Academy, a Catholic girl’s school in Vancouver, and the Limberlost Place project in Toronto, a 10-storey building on the George Brown College campus.

Ontario commits $30 million for new Angus Glen South elementary school in Markham


The Ontario government is investing $30 million in the York Region District School Board for a new elementary school in the Angus Glen South area of Markham. The school, scheduled to open in 2028, aims to meet the needs of working families by providing 638 student spaces and 48 licensed child care spaces.


The Angus Glen South Elementary School project is part of a $1.3 billion investment to build new schools and expansions, including child care spaces, announced by Stephen Lecce, Minister of Education.

EllisDon launches new tech brand, Building Digital


Ontario-based EllisDon has announced it has launched a new sub-brand, Building Digital, that will offer technology consulting services and products to the construction sector.


The kickoff was April 25.


Daniel Meissner, EllisDon’s director of growth and strategic partnerships for digital and data engineering, said Building Digital will start by offering clients services in four areas: software selection, data infrastructure and AI, cybersecurity, and BIM and reality capture.
