Federal investment supports building 14-storey mass timber building at U of T
The Government of Canada announced a $3.9-million contribution to the University of Toronto for the construction of a 14-storey mass timber academic and research tower on its St. George campus. The contribution comes through the Green Construction through Wood (GCWood) program.
The new building, the Academic Wood Tower, with its innovative design and creative wood structure, will provide a new and creative workspace for several faculties and act as a living laboratory to further the university’s innovation agenda. The structure is being constructed almost entirely from engineered Canadian timber.

What Ontario’s crane regulations overhaul means for the industry
The Ontario government’s recent overhaul of crane regulations reflects a significant commitment from all partners in the crane sector to keep crane operators and the general public safe says the head of the crane workers union. Various crane-related provisions of O. Reg. 213/91 (Construction Projects) and others under the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) were updated as of Jan. 1 to improve crane safety on construction sites. The changes include new installation, inspection and record-keeping regulations, some of which have been called for by crane safety advocates since 2008, said Mike Gallagher, business manager of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 793.

FedDev Ontario invests $2.5M to support Hamilton modular manufacturer
The Government of Canada announced a $2.5-million investment towards the growth of BECC Modular, a manufacturing company providing turn-key modular homes for affordable housing projects.
BECC Modular is coming up with innovative and affordable solutions to increase Canadian housing inventory. Through this investment, BECC will adopt more efficient steel frame manufacturing capabilities for modular home construction. As a result, the company is expected to produce up to 2,200 modular structures per year for single and multi-story buildings across Canada and abroad.

More Canadian employers using apprenticeships to fill shortages
Employers are getting creative as they look to offset the ongoing skills shortage. According to a recent Peninusla Group survey of small and midsize businesses across Canada, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom, some 46.5 per cent are investing in upskilling and training their existing staff and increasing apprenticeships by 36 per cent globally. Canadian employers are increasingly turning to apprentices, with the survey indicating a massive 217 per cent increase year-over-year. More than 25 per cent of employers list recruitment as their biggest challenge staffing wise, with pay increase requests coming in second at 22 per cent.

Ontario Place Update: EllisDon performs site servicing work; WZMH to carry out preliminary plans for new science centre
Site servicing renewal is underway at Ontario Place and EllisDon is onsite performing the work.
EllisDon Civil Ltd. was selected by Infrastructure Ontario through an open procurement to carry out the Ontario Place Site Servicing Renewal project. To redevelop Ontario Place as envisioned, significant improvements are required onsite to replace and/or upgrade the existing end-of-life infrastructure, a spokesperson from IO told the Daily Commercial News. This includes designing new internal infrastructure for water, sanitary, storm, electrical, gas and telecommunication systems.

Tower Crane Installed Behind United BLDG Heritage Walls
The United BLDG is about to begin its rise behind the tallest heritage wall retention project in North America. On its way to a final floor count of 52 storeys, the project by Davpart is saving the storied walls of the Maclean Publishing Company/Maclean-Hunter building, an icon of Toronto’s rich publishing heritage on the northeast corner of University Avenue at Dundas Street. Designed by B+H Architects with the heritage conservation design by ERA Architects, the project has now welcomed its first crane.

Net-zero Toronto police station sets high sustainability bar
When considering the design approach for the new Toronto Police Services — Division 41 in Scarborough, Ont. architects needed to figure out a way to maintain operations at the existing building throughout the construction process. Located at Eglinton Avenue and Birchmount Road, the two-storey, 60,000-square-foot building was designed by WZMH Architects. The original building, which has been on the site for decades, was formerly a courthouse and over the years was turned into a police station.
